Project Instructions

  • 1
If new to working with the French Knitter, follow the directions for how to work with it. For this project, the 6 pin top is being used.
  • 2
The knitted section of the lariat is 32 inch long. Create a "bead soup" by mixing the various beads listed together; make a small soup first, and add in as beads are needed just in case you don't need to use them all.
  • 3
String on beads randomly using the Big Eye needle onto the S-Lon cord. (Tip: it's better to add on more beads than less!)
  • 4
The first 10 rounds of knitting are without the beads. Both ends of the necklace will be later knotted to form the lariat.
  • 5
Following the directions, feed a bead between each peg as they are threaded around the pegs. Keep knitting until the desired length is reached. Note that the lariat section of the necklace will add another approximate 3 inches to the length.
  • 6
Finish the end of the necklace with another 10 rows of knitting without beads.
  • 7
Tie the two ends of the necklace together to create an over hand knot. Repeat again to make a larger knot. This is where the beaded lariat end will be created.
  • 8
The necklace will have two S-Lon threads, one which will still have beads on it. Move 5 inch of beads up the thread against the knot. Trim the thread leaving a 15 inch tail. Place the Big Eye needle to the thread and run it through the center of the double knot. Repeat again so the beaded loop you created is snug.
  • 9
String on another 5 inch of beads to create a second loop and tie it into the knot as noted in step 8.
  • 10
Use the remaining thread to create 2 additional loops, repeating steps 8 and 9. Make sure all loops are woven snugly into the knot.
  • 11
To cover the knot with beads, cut a length of Wildfire beading thread and add on beading needle. Run the thread through the knot a few times, adding a slip knot and coming out of the top of the knot. (For a slip knot, run needle around S-Lon thread in knot, but leave a small loop in the thread. Run the needle through the loop and pull snug.
  • 12
Depending on the size of the knot, add on 8/0 Black seed beads so it is long enough to cover from the top to the bottom of the knot. Run needle through the bottom of the knot back to the top near the first row of beads added. Continue until there are enough rows of beads to cover the knot. Some of the rows may overlap a little with the others, but that is okay. Run the needle through the knot a few more times to make sure that the bead rows will not become loose around the knot.
