Project Instructions

  • 1
The necklace shown has a length of 40 inches, consisting of 18 inches of braided beads with bead cones (which measure 3/4 inch each) and 22 inches of doubled chain.
  • 2
Cut a 4 inch length of wire; straighten out as needed with nylon jaw pliers. Using round nose pliers, make a wrapped wire loop by bending the wire along the widest part of the pliers, creating a round loop. Hold the wires where they intersect with chain nose pliers and wrap the smaller wire tail around the longer wire tail close to where the wires cross, making sure the wraps are close together. Wrap 3 times and trim; use chain nose pliers to make sure that the cut end is pushed flush against the wrap. Make a second one. These wrapped loops are what the beaded threads will be crimped onto and after they are braided together, the tail of the wire wrap will be inserted through the bead cone, hiding the ends of the necklace!
  • 3
To create the beaded braid, cut 9 lengths of thread measuring 40 inch each. Due to the braiding involved, it is important to have extra thread length.
  • 4
Separate threads into 3 bundles. Place crimp bead through 3 threads and run threads though wire loop and back through the crimp bead. Follow directions for using the One Step Crimper and crimp threads together. Tug on the wires to make sure that a good crimp was made and that the threads will not come loose from the crimp.
  • 5
Pour Silver lined bead mix in a pile onto work surface (tip: line the inside of a sturdy box lid with a bead mat; if the beads get loose, they will stay in the box lid!). Place thread through a big eye needle. These are extra long and will pick up a lot of beads at a time. "Stab" into the bead pile and string on beads until they are to your desired length. Close the end of the thread while you string beads onto the other threads using the bead bugs. String 2 sets of 3 threads with the Silver lined mix and the last set of threads with metallic Silver beads.
  • 6
Once all threads have been beaded, make sure they are all the same length and that the thread sets are all snug against the bead bugs. Tape or pin down wire loop holding beaded threads on work surface or macramé board. Braid the 3 sets of beaded threads together, keeping even tension when braiding so braids are consistent. When you get to the end of the braid, you will repeat adding the crimps around the second wire wrapped loop you created as explained in Step 5. This end is a little trickier because you do not want to undo the braiding, but the ends will again be hidden by the bead cone.
  • 7
Once the 3 sets of threads have been crimped around the wire loop, run the tail of the wire loop on each end of the necklace through a bead cone. On one end, create another wire wrapped loop with wire tail that is sticking through the bead cone, adding the toggle end of the clasp and making a tight wrap against the top of the bead cone.
  • 8
On the other end of the necklace, make another wire wrapped loop, adding the 2 ends of the chain to it (just fold chain in half).
  • 9
Add jump ring to other end of toggle clasp (tip: for added security, add 2 jump rings). Determine the center loops for the folded chain and add to jump rings and toggle clasp and close. Put the toggle closure together; the necklace can now be worn long or double it around your neck.
  • 10
Option: for a thicker braided necklace, add threads to each braid bundle; the thicker the braid, the larger the bead cone will be needed to accommodate the thicker, braided ends.
