Project Instructions

  • 1
To create the necklace, first determine the necklace length. For example, if you want an 18 inch necklace, 8 lengths of cord measuring 54 inch will need to be cut. The rule of thumb is the necklace length times 3. To determine the amount of beads needed, half the necklace measurement on each cord will be needed. So, for an 18 inch necklace, approximately 9 inch of beads will need to be strung onto each cord. The necklace shown is approximately 54 inch.
  • 2
Place the 8 cords (also known as warps) together and make an overhand knot on one end. This will be cut off later. (Tip: using the bobbins will help keep the project organized.)
  • 3
Use big eye needle on the end of the first cord. Pour beads onto work surface and "stab" into the bead pile stringing on the beads randomly onto the big eye needle until you have measured out the right amount of beads. Wrap the cord onto a bobbin, placing most of the cord and beads into it; once all cords have been strung with beads, you can then adjust bobbins to release some of the beads for braiding. Repeat stringing on beads and wrapping on bobbins until all 8 cords have been completed. Each strand is a different 6/0 bead as listed in the supplies.
  • 4
With the printed side of the disk facing you, place overhand knot in the center hole. The braid, as it grows, will feed through the hole in the disk. You will see on the disk that there are 4 dots with slits on either side of the dots; think of it as a clock; they are at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. Place cords in the slits that are immediately to the left and right of each dot.
  • 5
Start the braid for about a 1/2 inch with no beads; this will be wrapped and glued into the bullet cap later.
  • 6
For the braid, you will always be working with the cords at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. Note that as you complete a set of movements with the braid (Steps 7 and 8), you will be moving the disk clockwise, next working with the "new" set of cords at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock.
  • 7
First move the 12 o'clock right cord to the bottom right of the cords at 6 o'clock. You will now have 1 cord on the top and 3 at the bottom.
  • 8
Second movement of the cords is taking the left cord at 6 o'clock and moving it up to the left side of the 1 cord at 12 o'clock. Move the disk clockwise and you will repeat Steps 7 and 8 with the "new" set of cords.
  • 9
When working with the beads, you will be moving a bead from the cord you are working with to the center opening of the disk, making sure to tuck the bead under the cord that is crossing perpendicular to your working cord. Using the clock reference:
When moving the right 12 o'clock cord down to the right 6 o'clock position, tuck bead under the top 3 o'clock cord.
When moving the left 6 o'clock cord up to the left 12 o'clock position, tuck that cord's bead under the bottom 9 o'clock cord.
Tucking the cords under the cords as noted is essential to "lock" them in place.
  • 10
Repeat the 12 o'clock right to 6 o'clock right and 6 o'clock left to 12 o'clock left bead and cord movements, turning the disk clockwise each time the second step is completed until you get to the desired length for the necklace.
  • 11
Finish the necklace as you started in step 5 for 1/2 inch, then an overhand knot.
  • 12
To finish off the necklaces, follow the directions on the Kumihimo accessory package, which states to wrap a piece of thread around braid that is between the beaded braid and the overhand knot. Tie off tightly with a square knot. Trim off knot. Place glue in bullet end cap and place tied off end of braid into cap. Let dry completely and repeat with other end. Add jump rings and toggle clasp that comes with the Kumihimo bullet ends.
  • 13
The beaded connectors are two peyote stitch tubes created with even-count flat peyote stitch. Use any of the 6/0 beads from the necklace; Purple Passion mix was used for one tube and Purple Metallic for the other.
  • 14
With thread, string on 12 beads, leaving a tail. Pick up a bead and take the needle through the second bead from the needle. Continue to pick up a bead and run the needle through every other bead until you come to the end. It will look like a zipper. Turn the beadwork around and pick up another bead, running the needle through the high bead; the new bead will settle in the low spot. Continue back and forth until you count 12 beads on the end rows.
  • 15
When you put the two ends of the flat peyote piece together, it should fit, again, like a zipper, with the high beads one side fitting into the low beads on the other side. Run the needle and thread through the high beads of the seam, then turn around and do the same with the high beads on the other side, sewing the flat piece into a tube.
  • 16
From the outside row of the finished tube, start a second flat peyote piece, building it off of the first tube. Add beads from the existing row on the first tube, filling in the "low" beads with new beads. Continue until you count 12 beads on the outside rows. Repeat Step 15 by closing the second peyote piece to form a second tube attached to the first tube. Make sure to run the thread back and forth a few times so that the tube is secure.
  • 17
If there is not enough thread to add fringe to the ends of the tubes, weave the existing thread through a number of beads and at the end row run the needle through the threads on the side and through the loop of the thread, creating a slip knot. Continue through a few more beads and trim at the end of the row. Add a new thread on in a similar manner.
  • 18
For the fringe, two examples were created. On the Purple Passion bead tube, four of the 10/0 Metallic Silver beads were strung on and the needle passed down through the same end bead. It will look like to rows of two Silver beads next to one another. Bring the needle up the next end bead and repeat.
  • 19
After each end row bead has the two rows of two beads on them, pass the needle up the left set of two Silver beads. Add a single Silver bead and pass it down the right set of beads to the left of where you had just come up. You are adding a single bead between each set of 2 rows of beads. Repeat with the other end of the tube.
  • 20
For the second tube, a fringe was created by bringing the needle and thread up one of the end beads. Add on seven of the 10/0 Crystal Silver-lined beads. Run the needle back through the fourth bead from the end, add 3 more beads to the needle and pass through the same base bead. Pull tight so that the picot of 3 beads at the top of the fringe set correctly. Move the needle back up the next base bead and repeat for the rest of the end of the tube and then for the other side.
  • 21
Open up the necklace and string one end through one of the tubes in one direction and the other end through the second tube in the opposite direction. Put the toggle ends together and it is ready to wear. The beaded connector can be worn on the side or down in the bottom, center of the necklace.
