Project Instructions

  • 1
Turn the pumpkin upside down, place the thick dowel (vertical) in the center, trace around it, and then cut the circle out. Put the pumpkin on the dowel and place the thin dowel (horizontal) right under the pumpkin. Make a mark on both dowels where the two intersect. Remove the pumpkin and drill a 3/8”" hole straight through the vertical dowel where marked. Center it and add a bit of Quick Grip glue to where the dowels intersect to secure attachment.
  • 2
Cut the side seams and bottom of coffee sack to separate the front from the back. Trim the sides of the front piece so it measures 23”" wide, while keeping the original length. Fold across the center to create a front and back. Cut patches in fabrics of your choice, and pick at the sides of the patches to create fray. Use yarn and an embroidery needle to sew them onto the coffee sack. Snip a hole at the center of the coffee sack fold for the dowel to go through and drape it over the dowel.
  • 3
Sew the side seams starting 2”" down from the horizontal dowel to leave room for an armhole. Put raffia into the armholes, letting the ends stick out. Stuff raffia into the bottom opening, letting some stick out from the bottom. Take an 18"” piece of jute and tie bottom to close.
  • 4
Cut 2"” circles (eyes) in fabric and use tacky glue to attach to pumpkin. Then, use hot glue to attach a button to each eye. Cut a triangle (nose) in fabric and use tacky glue to attach. Cut one 7”" piece, and four 1 ½"” pieces of jute and use tacky glue to attach as a mouth.
  • 5
Put pumpkin onto the dowel for the head. Tip: add Quick Grip to the dowel to secure attachment.
