Project Instructions

  • 1
Thoroughly clean and dry the 2-liter soda bottle. Measure 4 inch to 4-1/2 inch from the bottom for the basket base. Mark the measurement around the bottle.
  • 2
Use craft knife to cut the bottom of the bottle where marked. Trim with scissors if necessary to get a smooth, clean edge. Put aside.
  • 3
Cut two 16 inch strips from Island Lime and lay on work surface, sticky side up. Fold each strip over on itself lengthwise, creating 2 long strips about 1 inch wide. Trim any exposed sticky side of the tape. Cut each strip in half lengthwise again. You now have four 16 inch x 1/2 inch strips.
  • 4
Repeat step 3, this time with Funky Flamingo.
  • 5
Cut twelve 5 inch strips from Blaze Orange and lay on work surface, sticky side up. Fold over lengthwise and trim any exposed sticky sides of tape. Cut these 12 strips in half lengthwise again. You should now have 24, five inch x 1/2 inch strips.
  • 6
Lay out the 16 inch strips in alternating colors, starting with Funky Flamingo. The pattern is as follows: Funky Flamingo, Island Lime, Funky Flamingo, Island Lime, Funky Flamingo, Island Lime, Funky Flamingo. Note: you will end up with an extra strip of Island Lime.
  • 7
Make sure the strips are lined up straight and touching side-to-side. Tear a 6 inch strip of Blaze Orange and lay this across the outer 1 inch edge of the laid out strips. This will keep your grid in place!
  • 8
Using the 24 Blaze Orange strips, start at the side where the strips are taped down and begin weaving the strips through. Weave each strip in the alternating pattern so that you have a 14 inch x 5 inch grid. It is important to adjust the weave so it is tight. The top and bottom should have 1/2 inch tabs at each end. The sides should have 1 inch tabs. Carefully remove the tape that was anchoring the pattern down; retighten weave as needed.
  • 9
Lock the weave grid in place by cutting a 15 inch strip of Island Lime and placing on work surface sticky side down. Cut in half lengthwise; you now have two 15 inch x 1 inch strips.
  • 10
Using the uncut side of the strip as a straight edge, lay the first 15 inch strip across the tabs at the bottom of the grid so all of the 1/2 inch tabs are covered. Line the strip right up to the last strip of Funky Flamingo used in the grid. Carefully flip over (make sure the tabs are all attached to the tape!). Smooth out and fold the remaining 1/2 of tape over to cover the other side of the tabs.
  • 11
Repeat step 10 with the top of the grid and the other strip of 15 inch x 1 inch tape. Put aside.
  • 12
To make the basket handle, cut 2 pieces of cardstock that are 12 inch x 3/4 inch each. Attach pieces together with glue stick so it measures 18 inch. Note: there will be overlap, but this will make the handle sturdier
  • 13
Cut a 19 inch strip of Island Lime. Place on work surface sticky side up. Center cardstock handle on tape and press in place. One side at a time, fold over tape onto cardstock handle. The second side of the tape, when folded over, the tape will meet or overlap. Trim excess.
  • 14
To attach handle to cut basket base, cut four 2 inch strips of Island Lime. Place the base on its side and position handle on inside of bottle at least 1 inch deep. Use both pieces of tape to attach handle to bottle. (Make sure that the handle tape seam is facing in and not out!) Repeat with opposite side.
  • 15
Cut two 1 inch strips of Island Lime. Cut first strip in half, creating two 1 inch x 1 inch squares Cut second strip in half, then half again, creating four 1 inch x 1/2 inch strips.
  • 16
Cut one 1 inch strip of Funky Flamingo. Cut in half, then half again so you’ll have four 1 inch x 1/2 inch strips.
  • 17
Wrap basket body around basket base by connecting the top edge of Island Lime grid with 1 inch x 1 inch square of Island Lime, folding over. Repeat with bottom edge, making sure the grid is lined up correctly.
  • 18
Place basket on its side with non-woven ends of the basket side facing up. Tuck in the tab ends to complete the weaving pattern. Use the 1 inch x 1/2 inch tabs of Island Lime and Funky Flamingo to lock the tabs in place. Finished basket, including handle, will measure approximately 11-1/2 inch high and 4-1/4 inch wide.
