Project Instructions

  • 1
Sand box and wipe with old cloth. Spray entire box with primer and let dry. Sand again and spray paint Black, making sure the box is completely covered. Let dry. Spray paint wood buttons Black and let dry.
  • 2
Cut twelve 2" x 2" squares balsa wood. Save scraps. (Tips: Score lightly first and then press more firmly to cut deeper, with several passes of the knife. Replace blade often. If you are using a different size box than us, adjust the size of the squares so they fit evenly on lid.)
  • 3
Use screwdriver, stylus and similar tools to make shapes and patterns on the balsa squares. (Tip: Practice on scrap pieces of balsa wood first.)
  • 4
Press marker on plastic plate to puddle paint. Then use the marker's tip to apply paint. Paint squares (but not the textures) in desired colors. Let dry. Spray squares with gloss finish. Let dry again.
  • 5
Glue balsa squares on box lid, making sure you plan space for wood buttons at intersections of squares. Glue buttons to lid.
