Elmer's Child Traffic Signs
Kids love to drive those play cars around, acting as if they're really, really driving down the highway. The fun becomes even more real when you use foam board, PVC pipe, paint and other supplies to help them make these traffic signs for their adventures!

A tip for cutting foam board, since you will be doing a lot of it in this project: Score lightly first and then press more firmly to cut deeper, with several passes of the knife. Replace blade often.
Step A: Trace the solid line pattern onto foam board. Trace the dotted line portion of the pattern onto Red cardstock and cut it out.
Step B: Apply glue to to the Red cardstock and glue it to the foam board. Repeat this entire step to create three more sections. Adhere the pieces to the foam board so the pieces resemble the familiar Red octagon with a White border.
Step C: Cut 4" letters that spell out STOP from Snowcap cardstock and glue them to the sign.
Step D: Cut 10", 8" and 6" squares of foam board. Find center of 6" square and use pencil to draw around a soup can to mark center opening. Cut an opening that is slightly smaller than the marked line.
Step E: Repeat step D for the 8" and 6" squares. Stack squares, with center openings aligned and secure with glue.
Step F: Take a piece of PVC pipe that is 2" wide x 32" long. Insert can into the stacked squares and then place the pipe into can. Fill extra space between can and pipe with small scraps of foam board wedged down in.
Step G: Spray pipe and base with Silver. Let dry. Place another can (upside down) to back of sign, using it to determine the height of sign. Then place can of sign onto top of pipe.
Follow the same general rules as Stop Sign, but use the appropriate pattern on Yellow cardstock and glue them into the shape of a diamond. Make 4" letters from Midnight cardstock that spell out SLOW and glue to sign.
Follow the same general rules as Stop Sign, but use the appropriate pattern on Red cardstock and glue them into the shape of an upside down triangle. Cut the dot/dash line on Snowcap cardstock. Make 3" letters from Red cardstock that spell out YIELD and glue to Snowcap part of sign.
