Project Instructions

  • 1
Allow paint and sealer to dry between applications. Project time does not include this drying time.
  • 2
Glue the four sheets together, side by side to create a 48 inch x 36 inch panel.
  • 3
Find an image of planet earth, either from a book, from the internet or where-ever you are comfortable looking. Have the image enlarged to your desired size.
  • 4
Trace onto the panel the outside circle of the planet.
  • 5
Cut out the pattern sections of land individually, and pin them in place onto the panel, and then trace all sections onto the panel. (Tip: For an easier and faster way; trace the pattern outline onto transparency film, and use an overhead projector to project the image directly onto the panel trace with marker.
  • 6
When cutting out the planet be sure not to cut out the entire circle. The bottom of the planet is left flat where it will meet with the black quilted fabric. The Black quilted fabric portion of the headboard would hang level with the top of the mattress, this quilted portion of the headboard could be cut to any design you choose or as pictured.
  • 7
All of the land sections of the planet will be raised; all areas of water will be indented. Use a craft stick to compress the panel around the outside edge of each section of land about 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch. Use the back of a spoon to compress the panel on all the areas of water, pressing the spoon firmly; leaving the water areas slightly rippled improves the look of the water.
  • 8
Paint your planet as pictured or as desired and let dry.
  • 9
Apply three heavy coats of an acrylic sealer to the entire planet. This will help protect the headboard from chipping and scratching.
  • 10
Glue batting to cover the bottom section of the headboard, front and sides.
  • 11
Glue Black fabric to cover batting, wrapping around and gluing at the back.
  • 12
Cut out your child’s name from the star patterned or Solid Blue fabric, and glue in place below the planet.
  • 13
Use Blue dimensional fabric paint to outline the letters.
