Definitely have a list! It helps when you start seeing things go on sale long before "the Christmas Sales" start. Right now we are being bombarded with back to school sales. It is "tax free" weekend here in GA, and I am doing some early shopping for the grandsons-socks, shirts, underoos--- there is a sock outlet having a huge sale tomorrow and I will be stocking up on socks for everybody...

I went on my sock outlet expedition and really got some buys for everyone! polo shirts for both the grandsons, underwear and socks also. For MIL I got some new undies and socks, hubby got socks and T-shirts, and my BIL even got some T-shirts. I treated myself to new undies. On the way home I stopped at my favorite thrift store and scored a bag of velvet fabric for 3 bucks, and a Vera Bradley tote bag for 4 bucks..It was a good day to shop--and all the clothes were tax free! The velvet fabric is going to be part of a crazy quilt which will be a gift for someone at Christmas, or be put in my booth at the Advent Craft Festival in December. I still have some wooden "treasure boxes" that I found last year by a dumpster, and cleaned up. I would love to do some fancy embellishments on them for each of the grandsons, like putting their names on the tops with fancy wooden letters..

Have you considered wood buring their names on the boxes?

Money is tight here too. I've got a list of handmade presents that we will be giving to help out. I think they are more special that way too.

Addie, that is a great idea! I actually have a woodburning attachment to my soldering iron. Hubby would be really good at that I bet! I try to get him involved as much as I can, so a gift is really from him also. He even help me pin quilts together!

And since you already have the necessary tools, less cost. Hubby sounds like a keeper to me.
