I'm looking at buying a cricut expression, and in doing alot of research i heard both pros and cons with design studio and sure cuts alot software. My question is which is better or is it better to have both?

if your talking about the DS and SCAL i would check out the new one that came out i can't think off of my head what it's called but it's another software for the machine and does the same thing that this do but has more things that you can do with it even loading your carts in it if i had a choice i would go with this one you can find more info on there site the cricut site

I think bluucaca is talking about The Gypsy. Basically it's Design Studio on the go. You can store all your carts in it and you don't need a computer-from what i read about it.

To answer your question, I think it would depend on your personal needs. I have DS and I like it a lot. You can only cut from Cricut carts that you own and you can also design your own cuts and save them in files. You can share these files with other people and they can share their files with you. If you have the George cart then you can pretty much design anything that you can think of.

I don't have SCAL but from what I heard about it, it's good to use with fonts that you download from the computer. I've seen some cool things made with it.

I hope this helps and let us know what you decide on. Welcome to this baord and I hope you stick around here. It's a fun, creative place. :-D

I'm adding the Gypsy to my wanted list but at $299 it'll have to wait a while.

I have both, but CDS suddenly stopped working last year and hasn't worked since. I LOVE SCAL---it is the greatest! In fact if I could only have one, I would only have SCAL. You can use any TTF font or dingbat and if you want, you can get advanced enough to make your own diecuts from pretty much anything. I LOVE that I have that option if I want...or I can just use the fonts. Its terrific!

I am actually going to be posting a video on this VERY topic at www.AboveRubiesStudio.com starting on the 15th of October.
I LOVE SCAL, and really the main question I think you need or should ask yourself is do you have a lot of cartridges or do you plan to buy a lot in the very near future? If the answer is NO, SCAL or Sure Cuts A Lot is totally for you!

SCAL allows you to use 1,000s upon 1,000s of fonts and dingbats and .svgs all FREE. There are also lots of resources for images that are very close to the Cricut Carts. I still LOVE my carts and my Gypsy, but SCAL gives you totally different options. My thoughts is if it's one or the other, go with SCAL, if it's both, still go with SCAL first and down the line get DS or better YET - the Gypsy!

I LOVE My SCAL and I have a lot of videos and FAQ's on my site about it. So if you have a lot of questions and want more info visit the site there is a contact form and I am happy to help you to figure out exactly what will meet your needs!

Hope that helps at least a little!
