Is this also known as 'tatting?' My grandmother does some and I've been trying to learn it. Unfortunately, I feel like I'm all thumbs.

As a child I learned knitting, crochet, embroidery, weaving, and other crafts. But tatting eludes me completely. I can still the look of horror on my aunts face just before she told me to stick to knitting. Then she left taking her shuttle and the subject never came up again.

I am not sure that anyone knows what bobbin lace is like. You have a lot of bobbins and thread a board to pin to and patterns that sit under the thread as you make the lace. Reminds me of macrama. I have not tryed this yet since it is an old craft, and learning materials are hard to find.
I have done tatting on hankys. but that was a long time ago.
If I did not explain this well please correct me
I enjoy knitted lace making and crochet lace. I like using thread cotton and am working on a lace scarf with number 000 needles. Needless to say I have other projects going at the same time because otherwise I would go nuts just with the lace.
Hope you find others who love you hobby

Tatting is one form of lacemaking. There are several. Bobbin lace, needlelace, tatting (with shuttles, Lacis(like tiny fishnets), crochet and knitting lace (much finer than regular versions of the same), and knotting (Filet)lace. You can find out anything about lace at my website http://lace.lacefairy.com

The hardest thing about tatting is transfering the loop to the other thread by sort of a popping tug. Hard to explain, easier to show. Other than that it is fairly easy to follow most directions. Try this on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOimfd-bRdg .....notice carefully at 134-138 seconds where she says "over, under, slaken off... and pull the shuttle thread gently" watch the thread loop go from her right hand to her left. This is the secret. Watch and rewind over and over this short bit and eventually you will see it happen.

Here's another vidio the shows only what she calls "the flip" where the loop is transfered from the shuttle hand, to the "ring" hand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgG-xUoegss&feature=related
