This sort of project works best for even beginners if we keep it simple. Make any pattern you like, as long as when completed the square is 13 inches (on all sides) so we can then put the squares together with some sashing in between, some around the sides and then add batting and backing. Very simple patterns are just as much fun as intricate. A four-square block is neat, easy and great for a beginner. Cut 4 squares 7 inches, join them together ---voila--simple and anyone can do that even without a machine. I use one-half inch seams, so if handsewing, just lightly pencil mark a seam line and sew away. Then I will put them all together for Addies son...she is such an uplifting spirit here on the forum, I think this would be a good project.

The more the merrier, everyone can do a simple (or complicated, depending on experience) square that will finish out at 12 inches when I put them all together. i prefer to use one half inch seams, for some reason my machine eats quarter inch seams. Any pattern you choose, in shades of blue, 13 inches total, and after it is joined with strips in between squares, the squares will be 12 inches. When I get back to Atlanta I will show some sample blocks.

I have a phat(sp) I've been holding onto for years, maybe I could use some of it for this.

Deeann,
What should the background of the block be? Maybe unbleached muslin? That would make the quilt more uniform. Just a suggestion.

We are going for shades of blue, so any pattern you want as long as it measures 13 inches (that allows for half inch seams to stitch to the sashing and such) and is ready to go. Some easy patterns for beginners are the nine patch, log cabin, four patch, pinwheel, rail fence, puss in the corner, and roman stripes. I figure we need 24 squares (blocks) and with some strips between and some sashing, it will work up to a good size. Any one out there game? Good way to practice a new block!!

Received a block in the mail today. It's a great applique of -- a PIRATE!!! We are on a roll! I have one cut out-- rail fence pattern using a navy pin dot, light blue solid and a multicolor stripe. These blocks are a good way to use up scraps, since making one block doesnt need a lot of fabric.

Go to EQuiltBlocks.com there are some very simple and neat blocks on there. I particularly liked the bow tie block and the attic window blocks. They are very adjustable for size and color. Finished block should be 12 inches square, with blue colors I think.

I cut it out on my Cricut using the paper doll cartridge. I ironed the fusible web to the fabric, removed the paper and then cut it out. You have to cut slow and I found it is best to use a new cutting board (stickier). You just have to watch it as it cuts to make sure it doesn't come loose from the board.

I made a square today, but I don't know if it's usable. It was the first one I ever made and I sewed it by hand. If someone could let me know where to send it, that'd be great. And if you don't use it, I won't be upset. I don't think it came out very good at all.
