Have you ever seen elderly folks with black and blue marks on their arms? Well, those are caused by being on blood thinners. I am on Plavix and full strength aspirin. Just washing my face too hard can bring on a mark and blue black (as my kids used to call them). So I had a small one on the side of my face. Nothing to be concerned about. And I keep my nails really short so that I don't accidentally scratch myself.
But!!! And it is a big BUT!!! I do let my thumb nails grow above the tip. So last night in my sleep I gouged that stupid spot with my thumb. And when I woke up this morning there was blood all over my face, hands, pillow, etc. Once I got the mess cleaned up, I cut those thumb nails so short, they may never grow out again.
I have other spots on my arms and other areas. I am not concerned. They tell me that my blood thinner is working. Without those spots, I would have clots instead and possibly a heart attack or stroke. But those spots seem to bother others. So when they ask, I tell them I am the Poster Child for "Abuse The Elderly." You would be surprised how many folks believe me.

Addie, you are truly a breath of fresh air. We worry about my dear MIL bruising easily like that. She always comes home from the hospital looking like she's been in a prize fight because her skin is so thin and she bruises badly when they start IVs and stuff. As far as your nails go, maybe a pair of light cotton gloves like they use to keep moisturizer on hands would help with the accidental scratching at night and have an added plus of helping to keep a nice moisturizer on your hands. I apparently scratched my leg a few weeks ago in my sleep and since I am diabetic, it is taking forever to heal as usual. The thought of those gloves for me sounds good....my hands are like sandpaper since I am fanatical about handwashing. I love to use Udder Cream, a great hand cream that doesnt leave oily re, I can even sew right after usung it.sidue

The last time I came home from the hospital, my son The Pirate said that I looked like someone had tried to stone me to death because I was no longer a virgin.

That is priceless Addie! Truthfully, I worry people may think we have abused her. The slightest bump and she gets big purple places. I told her the last time she looked like a rainbow with all the colorful bruises in different stages! Take care of yourself!!

Well maybe you should be drinking booze when you are reading the forum. That way you won't even care. In fact you may not even care about anything for the rest of the day. Pour one for me. A big one!!
