I got a call last night from my girlfriend in Atlanta. I will be spending the Thanksgiving week with her and her family. YAY!!! Of course there is an ulterior motive to the invite. I made the chocolate cake that is on the back of the Hershey's cocoa box the last time I was there and her father hasn't stopped raving about it. And that was about four years ago. I also made him from scratch cinnamon rolls for breakfast. He started crying. It reminded him of his mother's moring breakfast on Sunday.
I usually go to my daughter's house. But this year she will going out to dinner with her husband. Her kids are just about all grown up and have their own plans. So she won't have to cook this year.

Well, the plans are as follows:
I will arrive on the 23rd in the afternoon. We will go shopping for the holiday dinner. We will start preparing dinner on the Wednesday. I will make the cake that day also. I have a special cake pan that has a hollow center in it and I will bring it with me. I fill it with chocolate mouse and top with fresh whipped cream. I will do the mouse early on Thursday morning. After the big meal, her two grown girls decorate the tree. And I am looking forward to that. It has been a number of years since I have put up a tree.
Then the next morning we all will head out to Lake Lanier. They have a year round cottage there. I love it there. It is so pretty. The last time I was there the leaves were just starting to turn. I made the cake with freshly made chocolate frosting and a Yankee Pot Roast for ten people. And I made from scratch, cinnamon rolls for Sunday breakfast. It was a weekend of food, food, food. The cake is so rich that even though there were ten of us, there was still a half cake left over. So her father froze it and ate it little by little over the next six months every weekend that he went out to the cottage. We will stay there until early Sunday afternoon and then it will be time to return home. Not a day I am looking forward to.
Nance is the epitome of Southern Hospitality. When I told her the last time I just wanted to sit around and do nothing, she took me at my word. I don't consider cooking work. In fact one day I just hung around in my housecoat. When I visit anyone, I don't want to do the tourist thingy. She did take me on a tour of Atlanta the day I arrived. I got to see a lot of the old antebellum homes that were still standing from the Civil War era. We played poker, I fiddled around with the keyboard that is at the cottage, and just sat out on the veranda.
I am really looking forward to this trip. It is the first time that I have travelled since I became so ill with my heart and leg problems. But I am feeling like my old self and know that I am going to be all right. I still and always will, have problems standing or walking too long. So I will be using a wheelchair at the airports when I fly out and arrive. While getting better with my other ailments, my hips and spine decided to develop arthritis. So it does make running around a bit more difficult. But I always find a solution. And letting someone push me in a wheelchair is the perfect solution. I will go to the beginning of all the lines at the airport and will be the first one on and off the airplane. LOVE THAT WHEELCHAIR! I bring my Handicapped Placard with me everywhere I go. So Nance will be able to take advantage of it when we go shopping. As long as I am a passenger, I can use it in any state.
I am so excited. I have already made and paid for my trip.

There is a group of seven and we have all met each other except the one in Virginia. Your invite and the fact that she lives in VA, might just me an incentive. Just remember, I love to cook.

That sounds like so much fun and the food sounds absolutely incredible. I'm going to short circuit my keyboard because I'm drooling all over it. If any of my board friends here are ever in New Jersey please let me know so we can meet.

It sounds as if you'll be making some more wonderful memories, Addie! The trip sounds great, as does all the food, the company, and of course...the cottage :)

The cake Addie is talking about my grandmother used to make a couple times and year, and my Mom still makes it at least once around the holidays. It is amazing, not that I don't love even boxed chocolate cake, but this is so different and yummy made from scratch. My grandma and mom also makes the homemade cinnamon rolls and frosting. I think I am going to call mom and get that recipe and make them for next Saturday morning. They also make the most amazing potato soup - think I will get that recipe too. I am not the greatest cook and always was willing to let them do these types of cooking, but with my children getting older, I want them to remember me making those things too. Thanks for the memories, Addie!

I have always told my kids, look to the manufacturer for answers. After all it is their product and they know it best. And that is true of Hershey's. Their business is chocolate. And the cake is so easy to make. I keep a zip bag of the dry ingredients in the freezer. All that is left is the oil, vanilla, (although I have the dry vanilla) eggs and water. But that cake is so rich and moist. You have to take a small piece. And the frosting recipe that is on the box just adds to the heavenly pleasure. And for the cinnamon rolls, if you are not up to making your own dough, you can buy it in the freezer department. BTW, they are great with the puff pastry dough. You don't get as many, but great for just the one meal. You can get that in the freezer department also.

Thanks Addie. There are so many products to help along deficient cooks like myself. I have a good friend who makes EVERYTHING from scratch. I keep telling her that I am going to kidnap her one day and take her to the freezer section in the grocery store to see what she's been missing. He-he.

I have a girlfriend that states very emphatically that she doesn't do dirt (gardening) or flour. So I can understand completely. But I love to cook. Nothing gives me more pleasure and comfort that to sit at the table with friends or family and watch them eat a meal made from scratch. I am one of those cooks that everyone else calls for cooking answers.
