My DD is working on her Bronze Award, she needs to do her final project and wanted to do Cool Ties for our forces overseas but we just can not afford it (the gel is not cheap).
So being on this forum and seeing that you all are FABULOUS card makers and having whistlingypsy mention service projects on another thread I asked DD about sending cards instead of the ties. She thought that was a great idea. BUT she wants to send 500 cards because we planned to send 500 cool ties.
So how about it card makers? Will you help us? We are going to bust out the Cricut and make cards this week.
We are looking for ALL KINDS of cards that the people over there could send back to their loved ones back home. Of course the cards would need envelopes and we would like each crafter to sign the back of the card with a personal message.
I would like to send the first batch of cards out to our contact on the ground (we know lots of people there) by the 15th of October. Then he will distribute them. We can send additional shipments of cards as long as they keep coming in. E-mail me for my address...THANK YOU!
SLIDESHOWS (Click on the picture to start the slideshow...)

3/1/2009 So that you won't have to re-read this whole thread (I think it is 5 pages long now) I will post major updates here.
First our contact in Iraq was sent home early last year. He was supposed to come home last month but he came home in September. YAY for him, but not for our project! So I held on to the cards just KNOWING we'd get another brain storm or find another contact.
Well we did.
DD has now become a Cadette Girl Scout is diligently doing the prep work for her Silver Award and is even looking forward to her GOLD AWARD both of which will be a continuation of her Bronze Project.
For her Silver Award she will start a BLOG and we will offer cards to service members on a first come first served basis. In July her dad will "get on board" and place cards on his ship for service members to send home. We are working to find contacts on other ships as well. But we have to be careful not to grow too fast.
Before I go further I will say NO ONE WILL PAY FOR A CARD that you have sent!
We are posting your amazing cards to the site and will have some way for military members to choose a card to send to their loved ones (not quite sure how that'll work yet...)
Then we will print their message and send their card for them.
We have several ideas for funding the postage including a stamp drive.
If you have any ideas we'd LOVE to hear them, and of course we need more cards!
So read my last post (from today) and let me know if you'd be willing to help & an extra special THANKS to the card artists who have already contributed!
YOU ARE ALL AWESOME!
I am PM-ing everyone today, please let me know if I missed you!

cakesarefun, Seeing as you have a contact that you can send the cards to, they will be delivered. But cards marked to "any serviceman/woman" will not be delivered. Because of terrorist attacks the US forces have stopped all mail just addressed "To any serviceman/woman" and the Post Office will not deliver them either. You can use any of these to send your cards also: www.anysoldier.comwww.soldiersangels.comwww.uso.orgGood Luck! :)

When would you need the cards to you? I'd love to try and make you some. What "themes" are you looking for? Birthday, thinking of you?

Anything they would send to a loved one from Christmas to Birthdays to Thinking of you...even cards for men since there are women over there and everyone has a dad or brother. The area I would be sending them to has a small store and they do carry Hallmark cards, but not many and they frequently run out.

Not a problem. Just another question. Do you want all different cards or if I say make birthday can they be all the same or is it best to make each card different? I've never done this before and usually only make cards when I need them and for family.
