1Use a gauge of 11 sts (about 4 inch) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) to knit this hat that will measure about 20 inch in circumference, unstretched. Remember to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to match the gauge, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if it takes you more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Download template for knitting stitches and abbreviations not explained below. Notes: Hat is designed as a statement piece and is very oversized. Individual Strips are worked in St st (k on RS, p on WS), then woven together and secured with stitching to make a rectangle. Sts for the Hat Band are picked up along one side of woven rectangle, then the rectangle is seamed to make the Hat. Edges of strips will naturally curl slightly
2Black Strips (make 8) With Oakland Black, cast on 7 sts. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 12-1/2 inch from beg. Bind off.
3Neon Strips (make 5 2 each with Neon Orange and Neon Lemon, and 1 with Neon Pink) Cast on 7 sts. Work in St st until piece measures about 21 inch from beg. Bind off.
4Finishing Weaving Lay Black Strips side by side with long edges together and with RS of strips facing. Beg at one end of the Black Strips, weave a Neon Orange Neon Strip across the Black Strips as follows: Row 1: Weave Neon Orange Neon Strip under the first Black Strip, over the next Black Strip, under the third Black Strip, alternately over and under each Black Strip. With binder clips, clip ends of Black Strips to Neon Orange Neon Strip at each end and along the bottom edge. Row 2: Directly above the Neon Orange Neon Strip, weave Neon Lemon Neon Strip over the first Black Strip, under the second Black Strip, over the third Black Strip, alternately under and over each Black Strip. Secure the ends of the Neon Lemon Neon Strip to the first and last Black Strips with binder clips. Rep Rows 1 and 2 with Neon Strips Neon Pink, Neon Lemon and Neon Orange in that order directly above previous strips and securing ends with binder clips. When all strips have been woven, with matching color yarn and from RS, remove one binder clip at a time and sew strips together along both ends and both sides of rectangle. With matching yarn, sew a few sts through each intersection of strips. Band From RS with Oakland Black, pick up and k56 sts evenly spaced across one long edge of woven rectangle. Work in ribbing as follows: Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of row. Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Rep Row 2 until band measures about 2-1/2 inch. Bind off. With Oakland Black, sew side edges of woven Hat and ribbed band together to form a tube. Flatten tube, with seam at back and sew top edges together for top of Hat. Weave in ends.
