Project Instructions

  • 1
Use a gauge of 12 sts + 20 rows (about 4 inch) in Garter st (k every row) to knit a vest that measures approximately 38 (42, 46, 50, 54) inch in Closed Finished Bust and 26 (26, 27, 28, 28) inch in Finished Length (not including collar). Be sure to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches to match the gauge, try using a smaller size needle or hook; if it takes you more stitches, try a larger size needle or hook. Pattern and supplies are written for smallest size (S) with changes for larger sizes (M, L, 1X, 2X/3X) in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow a pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning. You will need 4 skeins of yarn to make this in size S; 5 skeins of yarn to make this in sizes M and L; and 6 skeins of yarn to make this in sizes 1X and 2X/3X. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere.
    Notes:
Vest is worked in one piece beg at lower edge. Piece is divided at armholes and fronts and back worked separately to shoulders.
At shoulders, fronts and back are joined to work collar.
A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
When you see ‘work even’ in the instructions, this means to continue on in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.

    Cast on 160 (179, 196, 211, 230) sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures about 17 (17, 17, 18, 18) inch from beg, end with a WS row.
Note: End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row.
  • 3
    Divide for Armholes:
    Next Row (RS): K49 (55, 60, 64, 70) for right front and sl to a holder; bind off next 5 (6, 7, 8, 9) sts for armhole; k52 (57, 62, 67, 72) for back and sl to a holder; bind off next 5 (6, 7, 8, 9) sts for armhole; k to end – 49 (55, 60, 64, 70) rem left front.
  • 4
    Left Front:
    Row 1 Decrease (WS): K to last 3 sts of left front, k2tog, k1 – 48 (54, 59, 63, 69) sts.
    Next Row: Knit. Decrease Row: Rep Row 1 – 47 (53, 58, 62, 68) sts.
    Rep last 2 rows 4 (6, 8, 9, 10) more times – 43 (47, 50, 53, 58) sts when all decreases have been completed.
Work even in Garter st until piece measures about 9 (9, 10, 10, 10) inch from divide, end with a WS row. Cut yarn and sl sts to a holder.
  • 5
    Back:
Sl 52 (57, 62, 67, 72) back sts from holder to needle and join yarn, ready to work a WS row.
    Decrease Row (WS): K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts of back, k2tog, k1 – 50 (55, 60, 65, 70) sts.
    Next Row: Knit. Rep last 2 rows 5 (7, 9, 10, 11) more times – 40 (41, 42, 45, 48) sts when all decreases have been completed.
Work even in Garter st until back measures same as left front, end with a WS row as the last row you work. Cut yarn and sl sts to a holder.
  • 6
    Right Front:
Sl 49 (55, 60, 64, 70) right front sts back to needle and join yarn, ready to work a WS row.
    Decrease Row (WS): K1, k2tog, k to end of row – 48 (54, 59, 63, 69) sts.
