Lion Brand Homespun Thick & Quick Cozy Checkerboard Throw
A throw with the great look of patchwork -- without all the seaming!

1Use a gauge of 5 half double crochet (about 4 inch) to crochet a throw that measures approximately 50 inch x 60 inch. Be sure to check your gauge. If it takes you less stitches to match the gauge, try using a smaller size needle or hook; if it takes you more stitches, try a larger size needle or hook. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere.
Afghan is worked in 5 Strips. Each Strip has 6 squares of color, and each square is made by working 12 rows of half double crochet.
Strips are sewed together along the long sides to create the Afghan.
To change color, work last stitch of old color to the last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete the stitch. Fasten off old color.
Work over yarn ends of old color or weave in ends as you work.
With Purple Haze, chain 15.
Row 1: Half double crochet in 3rd chain from hook and in each chain across - 13 stitches at the end of this row.
Row 2: Chain 2, turn, half double crochet in each stitch across.
Rows 3-12: Repeat Row 2. Change to Colonial in last stitch of Row 12.
Rows 13-24: With Colonial, repeat Row 2. Change to Claret in last stitch of Row 24.
Rows 25-36: With Claret, repeat Row 2. Change to Barley in last stitch of Row 36.
Rows 37-48: With Barley, repeat Row 2. Change to Purple Haze in last stitch of Row 48.
Rows 49-60: With Purple Haze, repeat Row 2. Change to Colonial in last stitch of Row 60.
Rows 61-72: With Colonial, repeat Row 2.
Make same as Strip I, working 12 rows of each color in the following order: Colonial, Claret, Barley, Purple Haze, Colonial, and Claret.
Make same as Strip I, working 12 rows of each color in the following order: Claret, Barley, Purple Haze, Colonial, Claret, and Barley.
Make same as Strip I, working 12 rows of each color in the following order: Barley, Purple Haze, Colonial, Claret, Barley, Purple Haze.
Make same as Strip I, working colors in same order as Strip I.
Arrange Strips, with long sides together, in the following order: I, II, III, IV, and V. Sew long sides of Strips together. Weave in ends. Note: When sewing Strips together change yarn as needed, so that the sewing yarn matches the color on one of the Strips.
