Project Instructions

Use a gauge of 16 sts + 22 rows (about 4 inch) over Stripe Pattern to knit a cardigan that measures for 6-9 months, 12 months and 2 years. This translates approximately to 18-1/2 (20, 21-1/2) inch in Finished Chest and 10 (10-1/2, 11-1/2) inch in Finished Length. The hat has a finished circumference of about 16 inch and will stretch to fit a range of sizes.
Save time, check your gauge. If the hook or needle listed under supplies does not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required gauge.
You will need 1 skein of Navy yarn to make this cardigan in sizes 6-9 months; 2 skeins of Navy yarn to make this cardigan in size 12 months and 2 years. One package of Happy is needed regardless of size.
Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow a pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.
Download the template for abbreviations and stitches not explained elsewhere and the pattern.
    Special stitches and abbreviations:
M1 (make 1) = an increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto the left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased. Pattern stitches =
K1, p1 Rib (over odd number of sts) = Row 1: K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end of row. Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.
K1, p1 Rib (over even number of sts) = Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of row. Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.
Stripe Pattern = Row 1 (RS): With Navy, knit. Rows 2-4: With Navy, continue in St st (k on RS, p on WS). Rows 5 and 6: With Sapphire, knit. Rows 7-10: With Navy, work in St st. Rows 11 and 12: With Aqua, knit. Rows 13-16: With Navy, work in St st. Rows 17 and 18: With Radiant Lime, knit. Rows 19-22: With Navy, work in St st. Rows 23 and 24: With Duckie, knit. Rows 25-28: With Navy, work in St st. Rows 29 and 30: With Goldfish, knit. Rows 31-34: With Navy, work in St st. Rows 35 and 36: With Cheery Cherry, knit. Rows 37-40: With Navy, work in St st. Rows 41 and 42: With Pink Poodle, knit. Rows 43-46: With Navy, work in St st. Rows 47 and 48: With Scarlet, knit. Rep Rows 1-48 for Stripe pattern.
Notes: Cardigan is worked in one piece beg at lower edge. Piece is divided at armholes then Fronts and Back are worked separately. Right and Left Sleeves are worked separately. Top section of Hat is worked back and forth in rows. Resulting rectangle is folded and side edges seamed. Lower ribbing is worked in rnds around lower edge of Hat. Color Navy is always worked in St st (k on RS, p on WS). All other colors are worked in Garter st (k every row). When you see ‘work even’ in the instructions, this means to continue on in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.
