1Use a gauge of 6-1/2 sc (about 4 inch) to crochet a hat that measures about 17 (19, 21, 23) inch finished circumference and 5 (6, 7-1/2, 8) inch finished height. Be sure to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches to make a 4 inch square, try using a smaller size hook; if it takes you more stitches, try a larger size hook. Pattern and supplies are written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow a pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.
