Project Instructions

  • 1
    Felt Food:
  • 2
Download and print the project template before starting.
  • 3
Cut out the shapes in your favorite colors of felt.
  • 4
Glue the felt pieces together to created the food.
  • 5
    Picnic Placemat:
  • 6
To make loom, measure and draw a line 1/2 inch from each short end of the piece of cardboard. Measure 1/4 inch intervals along each short end and draw a line to 1/2 inch line.
  • 7
Ask an adult to cut these lines with a craft knife.
  • 8
Now decide what color yarn will be your base color. We used Cream. Tape one end to the back of cardboard and bring through the first slit. Bring the yarn down to the first slit on the bottom and around the cardboard to the second slit. Bring the yarn back up to the second slit at the top and around the back to the third slit.
  • 9
Keep repeating this until you reach the end. Tape the end piece behind the cardboard.
  • 10
Cut about a 2 yard piece of yarn. We used Red. Tape one end to one end of a jumbo wood craft stick. This will help you weave the yarn. Tie the other end to the first length of base yarn. Weave the yarn under and over the base yarn until you get to the end. Go around the last length of base yarn and continue weaving but this time go over and under the opposite lengths of base yarn. Use your fingers to push each row up next to the previous row.
  • 11
When you are done weaving one color, leave about 4 inches hanging. This will be woven in at the end.
  • 12
Continue with your next color the same as above. We used Cream.
  • 13
Leave about 2 inches of the base yarn exposed at each end to make fringe.
  • 14
When you are all done weaving, pull the placemat from the loom. Cut the loops and tie two together to secure your yarn and create fringe.
  • 15
Use the wide-eye needle to weave the loose ends into the placemat.
  • 16
    Have an amazing fun picnic!
