We're all wise to the idea that kids can make an adorable mess of themselves while eating. The bib keeps baby's clothes clean. And whoo-new? It's made with a yarn that's soft and machine washable!

Project Instructions

    Use a gauge of 14 hdc x 10 rows (4") to crochet a bib that measures about 8-1/2" wide by 13" high. Be sure to check your gauge. If it takes you fewer stitches to match the gauge, try using a smaller size hook; if it takes you more stitches, try a larger size hook.

    Bib:
    With Sage, ch 20 sts.
    Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hk and across row, turn – 19 hdc.
    Inc Row: Ch 1, work 2 hdc in 1st st, hdc to last st, 2 hdc in last st, turn – 2 sts increase’d.
    Next Row: Ch 1, hdc across, turn. Rep last 2 rows 7 more times –-- 27 sts. Work even until bib meas 6-1/2 inch.

    Left Side Strap:
    Row 1 (RS): Ch 2, hdc in next 7 sts, hdc2tog, turn –-- 8 hdc.
    Row 2: Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc across, turn --– 7 hdc.
    Row 3: Ch 2, hdc to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn -- 6 hdc.
    Rows 4 through 10:
    Ch 2, hdc to end, turn.
    Row 11: Ch 2, hdc to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn.
    Row 12: Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc to last 2 sts, 2 hdc in last st, turn.
    Rep last 2 rows 1 more time. Fasten off.

    Right Side Strap:
    With RS facing, sk 9 center sts, rejoin yarn in with a sl st in the next st.
    Row 1 (RS): Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc to end, turn --– 8 hdc.
    Row 2: Ch 2, hdc to last 2 sts, hdc2tog, turn -- –7 hdc.
    Row 3: Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc to end, turn -- – 6 hdc.
    Rows 4 through 10: Ch 2, hdc to end, turn.
    Row 11: Ch 2 hdc2tog, hdc to end, turn.
    Row 12: Ch 2, 2 hdc in next st, hdc to last 2 sts, hdc2tog.
    Rep last 2 rows 1 more time.
    Fasten off.

    Edging:
    With RS facing, join Cream to point at top of Right Side Strap, 3 sc in same st as join. Sc evenly along strap inner edge to just before corner formed by strap and center neck, sc2tog in next 3 sp, sc along center neck to next corner, sc2tog in next 3 sp, sc evenly to top of Left Front Strap, 3 sc in next st, sc down outside edge of bib to corner, 3 sc in corner, sc to next corner, 3 sc in corner, sc evenly to end, join with a sl st in sc.
    Fasten off.

    Owl:
    With Orange, ch 3; work 8 hdc in first ch, join with sl st in 1st hdc.
    Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 2 hdc in each st, join with sl st in 1st hdc -- –16 hdc.
    Rnd 2: Join Cream, ch 2, work 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st to 1st dc –-- 32 dc.
    Rnd 3: Ch 1, hdc, [dc, tr, dc] in next st, sc in next 5 sts, [dc, tr, dc] in next st, hdc in next st, sl st to join.
    Fasten off.

    Eyes (make 2):
    With White, ch 3, work 8 hdc in first ch, join to first hdc with sl st. Fasten off, leaving an 8 inch tail for sewing to Owl.

    Finishing:
    Weave in all ends.
    Sew button to opposite side of button loop.
    Sew Eyes in place on Owl.
    Use sewing needle and thread to attach buttons to Eyes.
    With Yellow, sew 3 or 4 long whip sts to form Owl beak.
    Using photo for placement, sew Owl to front of bib.
    With Yellow, sew 3 or 4 long whip sts on bottom of Owl to form the feet.
    Fasten off and weave in all ends.
