1Use a gauge of 18 sts and 24 rows (4 inch) in St st to knit a cap that measures approximately 5 (5-1/2, 6-1/2) inch in length x 12 (14, 18) inch in width. Save time, check your gauge. If the needles listed under supplies do not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required gauge. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere. Instructions and supplies are written for size Newborn with sizes in Toddler and Kids in parantheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow a pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning. Special Stitch: Ribbing (multiple of 2 sts) = Row 1 (RS): * K1, p1; rep from * across. Row 2: * K1, p1; rep from * across. Rep Rows 1-2 for patt.
2With Papaya, cast on 54 (64, 82) sts. Work in Ribbing for 2 (2, 2-1/2) inch. Cut Papaya, switch to Beach Day. Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): Purl. Rep Rows 1-2 for 4-1/2 (5, 6) inch. Shape Top: Row 1 (RS): * K3, k2tog; rep from * to last 4 (4, 2) sts, knit to end 44 (52, 66) sts. Row 2 (WS): * P2, p2tog; rep from * to last 0 (0, 2) sts, purl to end 33 (39, 50) sts. Row 3: * K1, k2tog; rep from * to last 0 (0, 2) sts, knit to end 22 (26, 34) sts. Row 4: * P2tog; rep from * across 11 (13, 17) sts. Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and cinch top closed. Use tail to seam back of Cap.
3Finishing: Weave in ends.
