Premo! Sculpey Swirly Designs Valentine's Jar
Decorate a candy-filled jar for an extra-special gift!
- Time:2 hours
1Project time does not include the time it will take for clay to neither bake nor cool.
If you dont have cutters in the sizes and shapes needed, make paper templates by using scrap paper and scissors.
Any household kitchen item (such as the rolling pin) used on clay projects should not be used again on food.
2Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry well. Using wax paper, metal baking sheet or aluminum foil, knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between each of the colors of this project.
3Preheat oven to 275°F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Clay should be baked on an oven-proof glass or metal surface at the 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4 inch of thickness.
4Empty the contents of the jars and boil them to clean the inside of the jars. Set the glass bottom of the side and take your lids and with sandpaper rough up the lids. This will help the clay adhere better to the metal lid.
5 Take half of the Deep Red clay and run through the clay-conditioning machine on the #3 setting. Make sure it will cover the lids top and sides. Apply a coat of adhesive to the lid top and cover with piece of clay. Burnish with fingers, smoothing it out and removing any air bubbles. Use the craft knife to remove access clay from the bottom of the lid. Then take the craft knife and cut an x on the top of lid. This will prevent air bubbles when baking. Set aside your lid.
6Take half of the Dusty Rose clay and run through the clay conditioning machine on the #4 setting. Using a 2-1/4 inch scalloped cutter, cut out scalloped shape. Then take your 1-3/4 inch round cutter and cut the center out of scalloped shape. Remove the center so you are left with a scalloped circle border.7Condition a piece of Dusty Rose, Blush and Pomegranate clay. We recommend starting with your lightest color first and clean your extruder tool between each color so the colors dont mix together. Using your 1/16 disc, add your clay to the extruder and squeeze out a large enough piece: at least 12 inch for your spiral. (Tip: make more and have extra, in case a few break as you perform this step.) Do this for the three clay colors.8Using the scalloped disk take the lightest color string, Dusty Rose, and start in the center and create a spiral. You can decide about how many times you can go around. Remember that you have to get your three colors of clay in the center of your cut out. We went around three times with the two light colors and two times with the last color. Once you have the spiral finished use an acrylic roller to lightly blend your spiral into the scalloped shape.
9Get the lid and apply some bake and bond to the top and then lay your scalloped swirled design in the center of your lid. Using the rolling pin, lightly burnish piece to the lid. (Tip: dont press too hard so that you flatten your spiral design) Use your fingers to press down the scalloped pieces. Then use a knife tool from the starter set, and make a line from the center of your scalloped design to the edges, creating a pinwheel design. Dont press down hard, just enough to make an indentation.
10Use your needle end pointer and make two holes in the center of your lid. Take your wire cutters and a toothpick and cut off the ends and apply a little adhesive and insert them into your lid.11Condition a piece of Pomegranate clay and roll it into a 1 inch ball. Then using your fingers sculpt into a heart shape. Press the heart bottom flat so it will sit on the lid. Take your needle end tool and make two holes on the bottom of heart so it can fit onto the toothpicks on your lid. Take a piece of the Dusty Rose clay and run through the clay-conditioning machine on the #5 setting. Take a 3/4 inch heart cutter and cut out a shape and stick it in the center of the large heart. Then take piece of the Deep Red clay and run through the clay-conditioning machine on the #5 setting. Take a 1/4 heart cutter and cut out a shape and stick it in the center of your Dusty Rose heart. Apply more adhesive to toothpick tips on your lid and slowly insert your heart on top of the lid.
12Place your finish piece on a ceramic tile and bake in your oven according to the manufacturers instructions on the packaging.13Once your piece has cooled you can add small paint embellishments to your piece. Use the tip of a toothpick to paint the eyes, eyebrows, dots around the hearts and little hearts on ever other scallop around the side of the lid. Spray a coat of matte sealer, on your whole piece. Fill your jar with your favorite candies or any small items. Use some ribbon or paper to wrap around the jars or to make a tag and add it to the glass part of the jar. Tip: Be careful when removing your lid design not to hold/carry it by the birds or heart you should always open and close it holding it carefully along the sides of your lid.
