Project Instructions

  • 1
Twist first band into a figure 8 on the nails.
  • 2
Add two more bands, not twisted, on the nails so there are a total of 3 bands (1 figure 8, the others placed on normally).
  • 3
With fingers or a crochet hook, remove the bottom band from the nails so it is resting on the top of the bands that are stretched between the nails. You will likely have to push down the bands on the nails.
  • 4
Place another band on nails. Repeat Step 3 by removing the new bottom band from nails so that it is also resting on top of the bands stretched between the nails. So far, this is just like the regular fish tail pattern.
  • 5
Now for the “new twist”. Place another band on the nails. On one side of the loom, take the middle band and move it down below the lowest band. Next take the lowest band (which is now in the middle) and lift it up and off the nail. Repeat on the other side.
  • 6
Another way to perform Step 5 is with the crochet hook. Hook the middle band and stretch it out. Have your finger hold it away from the nail. Use the crochet hook to grab the bottom band and remove it from the nail. Release the stretched out band back so it is back against the nail. Repeat for other side.
  • 7
Repeat Step 5 or 6 until desired length. The bracelet will lengthen and feed out from the bottom of the nails.
  • 8
When the desired length is reached, carefully add the clip or jump ring to both sides of the bands that are around the nails (be sure that the 4 band loops are placed onto clip, otherwise it will come apart!).
  • 9
To add the buttons, push bands into the shank on the back of the buttons.
  • 10
For the sample shown, add 10 bands before adding a band that holds the button. Continue adding another 10 bands before the next button.
  • 11
For the button clasp, place band with button on nails with button facing away from you. Move the bottom band off the nails.
  • 12
Pull the two bands remaining from only 1 of the nails.
  • 13
Carefully pull the bands over the button. Make sure that the bands still sitting on the other nail do not come off.
  • 14
Pull bands off of second nail and stretch them over the button. You are basically crossing the bands on either side of the button to the other side, “locking” the button and bracelet in place; it won’t come undone.
  • 15
Take the two bands that are at the other end of the bracelet and wrap over the button. You won’t even have to open or close the bracelet again, just roll over your wrist.
