Project Instructions

  • 1
    Cover wood whale with Gesso.
  • 2
Create galaxy design. Start with large areas of black paint, fade out the edges using circular motions and almost a dry brush. Add in patches of other colors making sure to use a little bit of paint at a time, and circular motions to blend out the edges. Continue adding black and color patches until whale is covered.
  • 3
Thin white paint down with water and flick over surface with a fan paint brush. Tap barrel of brush with your finger to create stars. TIP: The farther from the surface you flick paint, the smaller the splatter dots. The closer the brush is to the surface, the larger the splatter. Add galaxies and shining stars with a small paint brush.
  • 4
Paint pegs black. Add desired colors to tips of pegs.
  • 5
Trace horn template onto balsa wood and cut using craft knife. Paint horn white, and let dry. Paint a layer of metallic pearl paint on top of the white, and add pink and purple to the horn to emphasize the spiral shape.
  • 6
Trace whale's head onto bottom of horn and cut balsa to fit. Glue in place with quick-grip adhesive.
