Project Instructions

  • 1
Do not use unbaked clay on unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 °F for 15 minutes per 1/4 in thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use.
  • 2
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
  • 3
Condition clay and run the White clay through the pasta machine on the thickest setting to make a sheet that is at least 4 inch X 4 inch.
  • 4
Roll 1/4 package each of Plum, Granny Smith, Hot Pink, Yellow, and Just Orange into long ropes at least 16 inches long.
  • 5
Push all the ropes together with sides touching. Gently pinch so the ropes stay connected to each other. Press the ropes through the pasta machine on the thickest setting so they become flattened together like ribbon candy.
  • 6
Lay the ribbon across the white clay and trim each end. Repeat until you have covered the entire sheet of white clay with the ribbons. Press the White/ribbon sheet through the pasta machine on the thickest setting.
  • 7
Condition clay and run the Plum clay through the pasta machine on the 3rd thickest setting to make a sheet large enough to cover the entire white/ribbon sheet. The ribbons should be sandwiched between the White clay and the Plum clay.
  • 8
Starting at one end roll up the Plum/ribbons/White clay sheet into a jelly roll with the Plum on the outside (bottom). The ribbons should be running parallel with the length of the cane when you are rolling them up inside.
  • 9
Reduce the cane by rolling it gently on your work surface until it is about 9/16 inches in diameter.
  • 10
Remove the cap and use pliers to remove the ink cartridge from the pen. You may discard the cap if you wish. Set the ink cartridge aside.
  • 11
Using the super slicer, slice off 20 thin slices from the ribbon cane (approx.. 1/16 inches thick).
  • 12
Position the slices starting at the closed end of the pen barrel. Put 2 slices opposite each other and then alternate the position of the slices in the next row. Continue positioning slices on the pen barrel until it is covered. Do not allow the slices to overlap; a slight gap between slices is fine.
  • 13
Gently roll the pen on the work surface in front of you to smooth all the slices together and to close the gaps. Using the super slicer, trim any excess clay away from the open end of the pen barrel. Bend the slices over the closed end of the barrel.
  • 14
Bake the pen according to manufacturer's instructions for the clay.
  • 15
Tip: To change the look of your ribbon canes you can use a different color in step 5 so that you have a different dominant color.
