Project Instructions

  • 1
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry well before starting and after finishing project. Using wax paper, metal baking sheet or aluminum foil, knead clay until soft and smooth. Preheat oven to 275°F (130 °C).
  • 2
Select a Sculpey color of your choice. Choose a design or pattern from the internet or come up with your own. Whatever design you choose, it will need to created with either a laser jet printer or toner-based copier.
  • 3
Roll out half your clay out on the widest setting of the pasta machine. You want to create a sheet of clay that is at least 3 inch wide by 8-1/2 inch long (or 1/2 inch longer and wider than your desired finished size).
  • 4
Place your two bamboo skewers so that they are positioned evenly on the clay and press them into the clay. A glue bottle will run along the skewers and press them in nicely!
  • 5
Remove the skewers and drag the blunt end of a skewer through the two channels to make sure that they are evenly impressed. Set this sheet of clay aside.
  • 6
Roll out the other half of your clay and then turn the pasta machine down 2 setting to a thinner setting and roll through again. Remember, you are aiming for a piece of clay that is 1/2 inch wider and 1/2 inch longer than your final size.
  • 7
Place the piece of paper with your pattern (or "transfer") face down on this sheet of clay and apply your rubbing alcohol with a cotton ball, soaking the ENTIRE piece of paper as quickly as you can. Wet even the edges of the paper so they won’t pull up. Run the paper lightly with your finger to remove any visible air bubbles.
  • 8
Once the alcohol has evaporated, resoak the transfer again. Repeat once more and then peel up a corner of the transfer and check it. If your ink has transferred, SLOWLY peel the paper up watching to make sure that your transfer is complete on the entire image. If you see a spot that didn’t transfer, lay the paper back down, resoak that area and lightly rub with your finger. Continue to remove the paper.
  • 9
Trim the ends of the transferred sheet of clay to the edge of the transfer.
  • 10
Lay this sheet on top of the channel sheet of clay being careful to center the channels on each end (this is why you should trim the ends of the transfer sheet).
  • 11
Trim the top and bottom edges – either in a straight edge or a curving edge.
  • 12
Cut your sheet into beads – once again either cutting even pieces or random curved pieces. You can even cut the corners off to create another pattern.
  • 13
Use your poultry needle as a bead drill to clear your channels. Make sure you don’t get your beads out of order!
  • 14
Bake as directed on the clay package.
  • 15
Thread one length of the elastic through the upper channels.
  • 16
Thread the second length through the bottom channels.
  • 17
Tie a double knot and trim the elastic.
  • 18
Gently brush a light coat of sealant (such as Sculpey Glaze) on your bracelet to protect the transfer. Heat both with a heat gun for a moment or two to harden them.
