Project Instructions

  • 1
Project time does not include drying time. Wash jar with hot, soapy water. Remove all labels and glue residue. Dry well, then clean with glass cleaner.
  • 2
Gently peel the letters one at a time for the word “BUG” from the carrier sheet of the stencil sheet and apply to the middle of the jar, overlapping edges right to left.
  • 3
Repeat with the word “JAR” but placing the letters on the next line under the word bug, starting in between the “u” and the “g”. Overlap edges of the stencil top to bottom and side to side. If you plan on personalizing jar with a child’s name, repeat this step with the appropriate letters.
  • 4
Cover all exposed glass with masking tape, overlapping all edges of stencil and tape.
  • 5
Apply etching cream to the stencils. Read the directions from the package before starting.
  • 6
Wash off all cream and the stencils with running water. Dry jar well. Pat letters well on paper towel and return to carrier sheet.
  • 7
If you chose to purchase the insect stencils, cut apart some of them. Determine where you would like to place your dragonflies and how many. Hold them in place with small pieces of masking tape around the jar. You can add as many bugs as you like, just make sure you consider clustering some of them around the etched words. Have some tilted up, some down, some facing away from each other, to look more natural.
  • 8
Rub each stencil down onto the glass using the popsicle stick that came in your package. Cover all exposed glass with masking tape, overlapping all edges of tape and stencil.
  • 9
Apply glass etching cream to the stencils.
  • 10
Wash off all cream and the stencils with running water. Dry well.
  • 11
You may want to place some of the fish tank gravel or tiny rocks from outdoors to the bottom of the jar, add a twig and some small fresh leaves to make the jar feel more like home for the bugs. Or, you may want to cover the opening of jar with netting and tie with string. Pull ends of netting down to make the top smooth and snug. Trim excess around the edges.
