Project Instructions

  • 1
Allow paint to dry between steps. Project time does not include this drying time. Notes: To help with adhesion and give crisper edges to your project, make sure paint is completely dry and surface clean and smooth before you apply the stencil. Be sure to bring the birdbath indoors during winter months, as any moisture left in them can cause it to freeze and break.
  • 2
Clean clay pot and saucer surface completely, removing any dust or dirt. (You can wash pot and saucer in warm soapy water. Be sure to allow them to dry completely before painting or results won't be as satisfactory. Terra cotta should appear Light Orange when completely dried.)
  • 3
Using 1/2 inch stroke brush, paint streaks of Cloud White around pot and then add small amounts of Lavender Fields. Continue alternating colors and blending, covering entire pot surface until you get desired effect. Repeat process on saucer.
  • 4
Download and print project template (or draw outline of a dragon and butterfly freehand). Cut out shapes. These can be your stencils.
  • 5
Place stencil on front of pot. (See photo.) Using small stipple brush, gently pounce Petunia Purple over stencil opening. (Do not use too much pressure, as this can cause paint to seep beneath stencil edges and blur design. Should this happen, use toothpick to remove any excess paint before it dries. If already dried, use small liner brush to touch up any areas you aren't happy with.)
  • 6
Repeat with remaining stencil on center interior of saucer.
  • 7
Once dry, use stylus or tip of toothpick to dot randomly on butterfly and dragonfly using Wrought Iron Black, Lavender Fields and Cloud White. (See photo.) Use #1 round brush and Petunia Purple to make flight trail.
  • 8
Once dry, and if desired, adhere saucer to pot using glue.
