Project Instructions

  • 1
Project time does not include drying time for the paint. Note: These shoes are intended for playtime only and are not regulation ballet lesson quality.
  • 2
In a well-ventilated area, spray paint each shoe Turquoise (or desired color) following manufacturer’s directions. Add two or more coats if necessary.
  • 3
Cut Turquoise tulle to wrap shoe with overlap 3/4 inch inside of shoe.
  • 4
Glue tulle to shoe at the sole seam and overlap to inside.
  • 5
Cut four 36 inch lengths of Island Blue and glue inside for lace up stands
  • 6
Create single loop braid by holding the ribbon at the center and forming a flat loop by crossing the right ribbon over the left. With the ribbon coming from the top of the cross, create another flat loop by folding the ribbon back on itself, wrong sides together and slipping it into the previous loop. Draw the loops together snugly, down to the ribbon width. Pick up the ribbon on the right side, fold it back on itself to make a flat loop and slit it through the left loop. Draw the left loop snug. (Tip: the width of the ribbon determines the length of you need. The picture shows a 6 inch braid on each shoe, meaning approximately 54 inch of ribbon is needed for each shoe.)
  • 7
Glue finished braids to shoe tops.
  • 8
Make 4 tiny simple shoe string bows Turquoise ribbon and glue 1 to heal back & 1 braid attaches to the front of the shoe.
  • 9
Cut two 2 inch Lime glitter tulle squares and glue to top of the bow where braid meets shoe.
  • 10
Use the Satin Hot Pink to make ribbon flowers. Draw a 1/2 inch circle onto backing fabric. Cut 3 yards of ribbon. Knit the thread near the end of the ribbon. Take three small stitches into the ribbon that are 2 inch apart and pull up on thread, forming loops. Tack loops onto circle, with loops pointing outward. Repeat, working around the circle. Form an inner layer of loops by taking three small stitches into the ribbon that are 2 inch apart and pull up on thread. Continue to ribbon end. Tack end to backing.
  • 11
After child puts on shoes, pull ribbons around and back making a cross pattern and then tie bow in the back. Cut off any access ribbon.
