Turn an inexpensive display shelf into a sleek, colorful home accent by dye-staining the wood.

Project Instructions

  • 1
Project time does not include the time for the dye to dry.
  • 2
Cover work surface with newspaper or a plastic table cover.
  • 3
Start by sanding down the wood shelf to help it absorb dye better.
  • 4
Wearing rubber gloves, apply straight, undiluted dye in the color of your choice to the display shelf (we used Candy Apple Red but you can use whatever color you like best), using the sponge applicator to paint the dye onto the wood. This dye works just like wood stain so it's a very fast process. The sponge applicator will help you get all the corners of the shelf.
  • 5
As soon as the display shelf fully dries, it’s ready to hang up in your room.
  • 6
Optional: to seal dye-stained wood, apply 1-2 coats of clear polyurethane with a new bristle brush. Lightly rub with 220-grit fine sandpaper, between coats and remove dust and filings with a tack cloth.
