Rit Red Shelf

Turn an inexpensive display shelf into a sleek, colorful home accent by dye-staining the wood.

Project Details

  • Level:beginner
  • Time:1 hour

Project Instructions

  • 1
Project time does not include the time for the dye to dry.
  • 2
Cover work surface with newspaper or a plastic table cover.
  • 3
Shake Rit Dye bottle. Mix 4 tablespoons or ¼ cup Cherry Red Rit Dye with hot water in a small bowl.
  • 4
Wearing rubber gloves, apply dye to the display shelf using a sponge or paint brush to paint the dye onto the wood. Rit Dye works just like wood stain so it's a very fast process.
  • 5
As soon as the display shelf fully dries, it’s ready to hang up in your room.
  • 6
Optional: to seal dye-stained wood, apply 1-2 coats of clear polyurethane with a new bristle brush. Lightly rub with 220-grit fine sandpaper, between coats and remove dust and filings with a tack cloth.
