Project Instructions

  • 1
Remove back of 12 X 12 square frame and set aside.
  • 2
Mix a 50/50 wash of extender medium with Burnt Umber paint. Using flat brush, apply a very light coat across the large frame. Allow to dry.
  • 3
Spray back of stencil with spray adhesive and allow to dry slightly. Place on frame so that top of stencil comes to top edge of frame. Using pouncer, stencil design with Spa Blue paint. Remove stencil and wipe down.
  • 4
When first stencil is dry, reapply adhesive to stencil and turn upside down to paint the same design on the bottom side of frame. Allow to dry.
  • 5
Wipe down stencil, reapply adhesive, and now using bottom half of stencil, line up with right side. Stencil design in Buttermilk. Flip stencil and repeat on left side of frame. Allow to dry, then lightly sand entire surface.
  • 6
Remove back from small 5 X 5 rope-edged frame. Using pliers, remove the metal clips that hold the frame back in. Paint frame with Silver paint. Allow to dry, then lightly sand edges.
  • 7
Make a 50/50 mix of Burnt Umber paint and staining medium. Use a small brush to coat frame well with mixture, making sure to get into cracks. Wipe off with a dry rag until you are happy with the effect.
  • 8
Paint the inner edges of the large frame silver, then paint out from opening ¼ inch all along the opening of the frame. Repeat coats until stencil and brown wood are well covered.
  • 9
Glue small rope frame onto large frame so that openings line up using a very thin bead of Quick Grip Adhesive.
  • 10
Cut cork to same size as backing from small frame. Spray back with spray adhesive. Stick to frame backing, then insert into frame.
  • 11
This is just a suggestion for what to put inside of the frame. Also try using your favorite photo, found objects or a family member's silhouette.
