Red Heart Soft Crochet Baby Elf Hat

Your little buddy will love wearing this Christmas Elf hat in any season. Crochet this adorable hat for all of Santa's little helpers.

Use a gauge of 16 sc and 12 rows of sc = 4" with larger hook to crochet a hat that measures approximately 19-1/2 (21-1/2)" in finished hat length. (This roughly corresponds with an 18" (20") baby's head.) When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

    Pom Pom
Make pom pom using A and 3 or 4 fingers of hand as follows:
    a) Cut 18" length of yarn and set aside. Hold hand as if to shake hands, with fingers together and extended.
    b) Wrap yarn around extended fingers for 120 wraps.
    c) While wraps are still on fingers, fold cut length of yarn in half and slip under the wraps. With folded yarn in place, slip the yarn off fingers. Tie yarn length tightly in a secure knot.
    d) Hold yarn wraps tightly in fist with tie dangling from bottom of fist and the looped wraps extending over top of closed fist. Carefully trim loops to form pom pom. Grasp by tie and shake to fluff out.
  • 7
    Finishing
Sew pom pom securely to tip of Hat. Weave in and trim all yarn ends.
