Project Instructions

    Notes:
•Do not prewash fabrics. Before cutting, press fabrics with a dry iron on cotton setting and remove selvages. You will have enough supplies to make a bow tie that measures 2-3/4” x 5-1/4” with a neckband that fits up to 15-1/4”.
•Download and print project template before starting for the diagrams ("Dia.") referenced in this project. Use a 1/4" seam allowance and sew fabrics with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise noted. Backstitch at the beginning and end of seams.
•If you need to wash your bow tie, do so by hand washing in cold water and hanging to dry. Touch up with warm iron if needed.

    Cutting:
Step A: Cut 1 piece from the fat quarter that is 14-1/2” x 6-1/2” (bow)
Step B: Cut 1 piece from the fat quarter that is 2" x 2-1/2” (knot)
Step C: Cut 1 piece from the fat quarter that is 2-1/2" x 20" (neckband)

    Sewing:
Step A: Fold bow in half RST matching long edges. Press fold firmly then fold bow in half again matching short edges. Place the tip shaper template on the end opposite the vertical fold. Match long edges to the bow edges and the point on the short edge. Mark along edges of the template then cut along the lines to shape the bow ends (Dia. A). Sew around short ends and bottom leaving a 3" opening in the center of the bottom for turning.
Step B: Trim seam allowance at the points to 1⁄8" and turn bow right side out with a chopstick; carefully push out points. Press edges of opening under and hand stitch closed.
Step C: Fold bow in half matching points and press to mark the center line. Leave folded and mark 4" from the fold (center line); sew along this line through all layers (Dia. B).
Step D: Open the back of the bow with ends pointing in opposite directions. Match the seam line with the center line; flatten the front loop and pin layers together along the center (Dia. C).
Step E: With RST, fold knot in half matching long edges and sew along top and side edges (Dia. D). Clip corner diagonally and turn right side out; press well.
Step F: Fold neckband RST matching long edges; press. Sew short edges and long edges leaving a 3" opening in the center of the long seam. Clip corners and turn right side out; press. Hand stitch opening closed.
Step G: Thread a needle with a doubled thread. Pinch the center of the bow firmly then wrap it tightly with the thread; knot thread and clip ends (Dia. E).
Step H: Find the center of the neckband and place it in the center back of the bow.
Step I: Center the cut end of knot on the backside of the bow and wrap the finished end around the front then to the back to overlap the cut edges; pin in place (Dia. F). Hand stitch end of knot snuggly in place.
Step J: While wearing a collared shirt, place bowtie around child’s neck. Pin and mark the overlap. Remove from child’s neck, separate the hook-and-loop layers and place them at marks on ends. Follow package instructions to attach.
