Project Instructions

  • 1
Choose the size(s) and color(s) of the crystals you would like to use. We used Light Siam, Light Rose and Jonquil, among others. It is also recommended that you also choose a pattern and determine how to apply this pattern to the tote bag (either step 2 or step 3) before starting. A video is also available near the top of this page.
  • 2
Place the tip of a washable fabric marker onto your paper pattern and firmly press the marker into the paper so the ink will penetrate the paper and leave a mark on the fabric or surface below. The ink washes easily out of nearly all fabrics, but we recommend you test it on a swatch of the fabric you will use. You can also use a sharp pencil or another type of transfer pencil (follow directions with pencil). If you add hot fix crystals, paints or other embellishments over the ink mark, it's not important if the ink washes out or not. Use the iron to place a Swarovski crystal over each dot. After the crystal is cool to the touch, gently rub your finger over it and make certain it has adhered securely to the fabric. If it moves, apply heat and pressure with the iron.
  • 3
Print out the pattern and place on a hard surface. Lay the Swarovski crystals on the dots of the pattern. Separate the transfer paper and place the sticky side on top of the crystals and remove the pattern. At this point you can either place the protective portion of the transfer tape to the sticky part and save your transfer for later or you can place the transfer onto your fabric.
  • 4
Use an iron with no steam vents on the soleplate of the iron (if you use an iron with steam vents, be advised that pressure cannot be applied at these vents, and water droplets and steam have a negative effect on the application results). A soleplate cover can also be used on an iron with steam vents and the iron should be dry and the “steam” option should be turned off.
  • 5
Choose an iron temperature between 120°C and 170°C (250°F – 340°F), or use an iron setting between one and two points, or choose the symbol for silk/wool or a similar moderate temperature.
  • 6
If necessary, tuck a piece of thick cardboard into the tote bag (or whatever material you are using) to protect it from indentation marks caused by the crystals.
  • 7
Always iron on a firm, flat and even base. Though not required, a Teflon underlay protects the soleplate of the iron from any glue residue.
  • 8
Apply the transfer or loose hotfix stones onto the fabric.
  • 9
Put the iron directly on the transfer, the pattern or the stones and apply moderate pressure without moving the iron.
