Project Details

  • Level:intermediate
  • Time:1-1/2 hours

Project Instructions

  • 1
Project time does not include neither the washing time nor drying the t-shirt nor the time for the dyes to set.
  • 2
Wash t-shirt and leave damp. Lay out flat on covered work surface and smooth out wrinkles.
  • 3
Lay out a paper plate at shoulder and waistline of t-shirt. Trace around plates with washable marker.
  • 4
Pleat along drawn line, drawing t-shirt into a straight line so marker forms a straight line along the tops of folds. Secure along this line with rubber band or zip tie.
  • 5
Secure additional ties outside of first tie to create desired number of color sections.
  • 6
Mix dyes according to package instructions (as shown, project uses Teal, Royal Blue, Lime and Purple).
  • 7
Apply dyes as desired to tied sections of t-shirt. Cover with plastic and allow to set 6-8 hours.
  • 8
Remove zip ties or rubber bands (from step 4) and rinse t-shirt under running water to remove excess dye.
  • 9
Wash and dry t-shirt according to dye package instructions.
