Project Instructions

  • 1
Start by making the snail's shell. When complete it has 11 loops, 5 on either side and 1 in the center, using over overlapping loops. Begin by cutting 2 dazzle Grape strips in each of the following sizes: 2-3/4 inch, 3 inch, 3-1/2 inch, 3-3/4 inch.
  • 2
Cut 2 dazzle Grape strips in each of the following sizes, to make the outer shell loops - 2-3/4 inch, 3 inch, 3-1/2 inch, 3-3/4 inch,
  • 3
Cut one additional dazzle Grape strip approximately 4-1/2 inch. This will serve as the center loop.
  • 4
Loop the 4-1/2 inch strip. Slightly overlap the ends and glue together.
  • 5
Glue one end of the 3-3/4 inch strip to the inside joint of the center loop. Tuck the strip so that it is mostly under lapping at the bottom of the center loop and slightly under lapping at the top. Glue to secure. Repeat for other 3-3/4 inch strip on the other side of the center loop.
  • 6
Repeat Step 5 for the other eight strips, starting from the longest and continuing to the shortest. Each new ribbon should be secured to the previous on each side and should be tucked in at the bottom of the shell, forming a fan effect.
  • 7
To make the snail's body, cut four strips of grosgrain Lime ribbon. One strip should be 3-1/2 inch, another should be 6-1/2 inch, the third strip should be 7 inch and the last strip should be 7-1/2 inch.
  • 8
Glue the three longest strips together at one end, with the longest piece on the outside.
  • 9
Roll tightly until 3 inch remains unrolled. Glue each strip at the snail's head, so the roll does not unravel.
  • 10
Glue the back of the head to the front of the shell. Thread the back piece through the shell and the two other pieces below the shell.
  • 11
Glue the three body pieces together before they enter the bottom of the shell. The snail’s chest should protrude so that it is level with the front of the head.
  • 12
Glue the inside body piece to the bottom/inside of the shell.
  • 13
Glue the outside body pieces to the outside/bottom of the shell.
  • 14
Trim excess body ribbon at back end of the shell (if needed).
  • 15
Twist and fold the ends of the 3-1/2 inch ribbon piece to form the snail’s tail. Glue the ends together. Glue finished tail to back of snail body near the back end of the shell.
  • 16
Cut two thin strips, about 1 inch long, for the snail's antenna. Use fray check if needed.
  • 17
Use hot glue to add wiggle eyes and enjoy!
