Project Instructions

    Use a gauge of 22 sc and 20 rows (about 4 inch) to crochet a zebra that measures approximately 7 inch tall. If the hook listed under supplies does not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required gauge. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere and the French Knot pattern. Note: Piece is worked in a continuous spiral; do not join rounds unless indicated. Change colors every round in last stitch of round. Carry color not is use up as work progresses, do not cut yarn.

    Ears (make 2): With Turqua, ch 5. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across—4 sts. Row 2: Working on opposite side, sc in 3 sts, slip st in last st, adding Spring Green at end of last st, fasten off Turqua. Row 3: With Spring Green, ch 1, slip st in same st and in next 3 sts, ch 1, sc in same st, rotate and working along opposite side, slip st in each st across. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

    Head: Round 1: Begin at muzzle; with Black, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join—6 sc. Round 2: Place marker, *2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around—12 sts. Round 3: *Sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around—18 sts. Rounds 4-5: Sc in each st around, change to Turqua in last st of Round 5. Round 6: *Sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around, change to Spring Green in last st—12 sts. Round 7: *Sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around, change to Turqua in last st—18 sts. Round 8: *2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from *around, change to Spring Green in last st—24 sts. Round 9: *3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from *around, change to Turqua in last st—30 sts. Round 10-11: Maintaining stripe pattern, *sc in each st around, change to Turqua in last st of Round 11—30 sts. Round 12: *3 sc, sc2tog; repeat from *around, change to Spring Green in last st—24 sts. Round 13: Add ears; sc in 5 sts, holding bottom edge of ear in place, join to next st with sc through all layers, sc in next 4 sts, holding 2nd ear along edge join with sc in next st, sc in next 13 sts, change to Turqua in last st—24 sts. Round 14: Sc in each st around, change to Spring Green in last st—24 sts. Round 15: *2 sc, sc2tog; repeat from *around, change to Turqua in last st—18 sts. Round 16: *Sc, sc2tog; repeat from *around, change to Spring Green in last st, stuff head firmly—12 sts. Round 17: *Sc2tog; repeat from *around—6 sts. Fasten off, weaving tail through opening and pulling tightly to close. Set aside.

    Body: With Turqua, ch 14, join with slip st. Round 1-2: Working in stripe pattern throughout, sc in each st around—14 sts. Round 3: *6 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * 2 times—16 sts. Round 4: *7 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * 2 times—18 sts. Round 5: Sc in each st around—18 sts. Round 6: *2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around—24 sts. Round 7-11: Sc in each st around—24 sts. Round 12: *2 sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around—18 sts. Round 13: Sc in each st around—18 sts. Round 14: Divide sts for legs; sc in 4 sts, skip 10 sts, sc in last 4 sts, first leg opening made—8 sc worked. Stuff torso. Round 15-20: Leaving skipped sts unworked, sc in each of the 8 leg sts around, join Black in last st of Round 20, fasten off Turqua and Spring Green—8 sts. Stuff legs as rounds are completed. Round 21: 2 sc in each st around—16 sts. Round 22: Sc in each st around. Round 23: *Sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around, end sc—11 sts. Continue to stuff leg. Round 24: *3 sc, sc2tog; repeat from * twice, end sc—9 sts. Round 25: *Sc, sc2tog; repeat from * 3 times—6 sts. Fasten off, weaving tail through hole and pulling tightly to close. Trim excess yarn. Round 26: Begin 2nd leg; Skip 1 st from leg just made (these sts will be sewn closed after making 2nd leg), join yarn to next st, ch 1, sc in st and in next 7 sts around—8 sts. Round 27: Repeat Rounds 14-25 for 2nd leg. Fasten off as for first leg. Sew opening closed. Weave in ends.

    Arms (make 2): With Turqua, Ch 6, join with slip st. Round 1-7: Working in stripe pattern, sc in each st around, adding Black in last st of last round, fasten off Turqua and Spring Green—6 sts. Round 8: 2 sc in each sc around—12 sts. Round 9: Sc in each st around. Round 10: *Sc, sc2tog; repeat from * 4 times—8 sts. Stuff arm. Round 11: *2 sc, sc2tog; repeat from * 2 times—6 sc. Fasten off, weaving tail through hole and pulling tightly to close.

    Mane: With Turqua ch 14, fasten off. Cut several 4 inch lengths of yarn in Turqua and Spring Green. Hold one strand of each together, fold in half. Insert hook through chain, pull strands through to make a loop, pull ends through loop to secure. Repeat until mane is full. Sew to back of head and neck, trim.

    Tail: Ch 5, slip st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Make fringe in end of tail as for mane. Sew in place, trim.

    Finishing: Sew head to body at neck opening and join arms at shoulders. With Black, embroider eyes as shown, using a French Knot. Fluff mane.
