Project Instructions

    Use a gauge of 20 sts and 26 rows (4 inch) in stocking st to knit a cozy that will fit over a 6 cup teapot. Save time, check your gauge. If the needles listed under supplies does not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required gauge. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere and the pattern. Special abbreviations: alt = alternate(ing) Inc1 = Increase 1 stitch by knitting into front and back of next stitch. P2togtbl = Purl next 2 stitches through back loops. Note: When working from chart, wind small balls of the colors to be used, one for each separate area of color in the design. When changing colors, wind 2 colors around each other where they meet, on WS, to avoid a hole.

    Front and Back (make 2 alike): With pair of needles and Grape, cast on 45 sts. 1st to 6th rows: *K1. P1. Rep from * to last st. K1. 7th row: (RS). K1. Inc1. Knit to last 2 sts. Inc1. K1. 47 sts. 8th row: Purl. 9th row: K23. Inc1. K23. 48 sts. 10th to 14th rows: Beg with a purl row, work even in stocking st.

    Work Chart in stocking st to end of chart, reading knit rows from right to left and purl rows from left to right, noting 15-st rep will be worked 3 times. Break Yellow. Next row: With Grape, purl.

P2tog. 36 sts. 7th and 8th rows: As 5th and 6th rows. 32 sts at end of 8th row. 9th row: Knit. 10th and alt rows: Purl. 11th row: K1. *K2tog. K5. Rep from * to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 27 sts. 13th row: K1. *K2tog. K4. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2tog. 22 sts. 15th row: *K2tog. K3. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2tog. 17 sts. 17th row: K1. *K2tog. K2. Rep from * to end of row. 13 sts. 19th row: K1. *K2tog. Rep from * to end of row. 7 sts. 21st row: K1. (K2tog) 3 times. 4 sts. Break yarn. Leave rem sts on a safety pin.

    With Medium Tangerine embroidery floss, embroider beak using straight stitch. With Black embroidery floss, embroider wings and legs using stem stitch. Embroider eyes using French knots.

    Finishing: Sew side seams, leaving openings for handle and spout. Top Tab: Divide rem 8 sts on 3 double-pointed needles. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st. With Yellow, knit 6 rnds. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end through rem sts and fasten securely.
