1Use a gauge of 17 sts + 24 round (about 4 inch) in Beaded Rib pattern using larger needles to knit a hat that measures 19 inch in Finished Circumference and 11-1/2 inch in Finished Height. Be sure to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches to match the gauge, try using a smaller size needle; if it takes you more stitches, try a larger size needle. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere.
Special stitches and abbreivations:
K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (over an even number of sts) = Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.
Beaded Rib Pattern worked in rnds (over an even number of sts) = Rnd 1: Purl. Rnd 2: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Rep Rnds 1 and 2 for Beaded Rib pattern worked in rnds.
Hat is worked in rnds beg at lower edge.
When knitting in the rnd on double pointed needles (dpns), your sts need to be divided fairly evenly onto the needles. If you are working with a set of 4 dpns, your sts should be divided among 3 needles. If you are working with a set of 5 dpns, your sts should be divided among 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical tube of knitting.
2With smaller double pointed needles (dpns) and Olympic, cast on 80 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 20 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
3Ribbing: Work in K1, p1 Rib for 24 rnds. Cut Olympic.
Change to larger dpns as you work the next rnd.
Rnds 1-6: With Arcadia, work in Beaded Rib pattern for 6 rnds.
Rnds 7-12: With Redwood, work in Beaded Rib pattern for 6 rnds.
Rnds 13-18: Rep Rnds 1-6.
5Shape Crown (top of Hat):
Note: Continue to change color every 6 rnds throughout shaping.
Rnd 1: *P14, p2tog, place marker; rep from * to last 16 sts, p14, p2tog 75 sts rem at the end of the rnd.
Rnd 2: *(K1, p1) to 1 st before marker, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: *P to 2 sts before marker, p2tog; rep from * to end of rnd 70 sts.
Rnd 4: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 5: *P to 2 sts before marker, p2tog; rep from * to end of rnd 65 sts.
Rnds 6-25: Rep Rnds 2-5 15 sts at the end of Rnd 25.
Rnd 26: *K1, p1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd. Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through remaining sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.
Weave in ends.
