Red Heart® Candy Corn Banner

Draped across the mantle or hung in front of a window, our Candy Corn Banner helps celebrate the spookiest night of the year! Simple embroidered accents create the faces on these easy to crochet motifs.

Project Instructions

    Use a gauge of 13 sts = 4” (10 cm); 11 rows = 4” (10 cm) in half double crochet to createa piece of candy corn that measures about 5-½” (14cm) tall and 5-½” (14cm) wide (at widest). Each piece of candy corn is made in four parts: 2 body pieces (for front and back) and 2 eyes. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Fasten off old color.

    (Make 10 – 2 for each piece of candy corn) With Soft White, ch 3.

    Row 1: Work 4 hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beginning ch counts as first hdc), turn—5 hdc (including beginning ch in the count). Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout), hdc in first hdc (increase made), hdc in next 3 hdc, hdc in top of beginning ch, turn—6 hdc. Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 4 hdc, hdc in top of turning ch, turn—7 hdc. Row 4: Ch 2, hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 5 hdc, hdc in top of turning ch and change to Pumpkin, turn—8 hdc. Row 5: With Pumpkin, ch 2, 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 6 hdc, hdc in top of turning ch, turn—10 hdc. Row 6: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 8 hdc, hdc in top of turning ch, turn—12 hdc. Row 7: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 10 hdc, hdc in top of turning ch, turn—14 hdc. Row 8: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 12 hdc, hdc in top of turning ch, turn—16 hdc. Row 9: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 14 hdc, hdc in top of turning ch, turn—18 hdc. Rows 10–12: Ch 2, skip first hdc, hdc in each hdc across, hdc in top of turning ch, turn—18 hdc. Change to Bright Yellow in last st of Row 12. Rows 13–15: With Bright Yellow, repeat Row 10 three times. Fasten off.

    For the Eyes - (Make 10 – 2 for each piece of candy corn) With Soft White, ch 2. Round 1: Work 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook—5 sc. Do not join. Work in continuous rounds (spirals). Place a marker for beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed. Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around—10 sc. Round 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 5 times—15 sc. Slip st in next stitch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing eye to body.

    To create each candy corn face, use photograph as a guide. With yarn needle and long tail, sew two eyes to five candy corn body pieces for fronts. Sew one 5 mm Black button to each eye. With Black, embroider straight stitch mouth and tongue on each front.

    Assembly: Hold one front (with face) and one back (without face) with wrong sides together. From right side and working through both thicknesses, join Black with sc in edge, sc evenly spaced around to join front and back; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends. With yarn needle, thread a long strand of Black through the tops of the candy corn pieces to make banner. Tie knots in strand of Black to hold pieces in place and space as desired.
