- Time:2+ hours
Use a gauge of 16 sts + 22 rows to knit a shrug that is about 38 inch x 44 inch (96-1/2 cm x 112 cm), before folding and seaming. Remember to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 inch (10 cm) square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if it takes you more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Download the full template for the pattern for this project.
Stitch Explanation: Pattern Stitch K1, p1 Rib (odd number of sts) Row 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to last st, k last st. Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Rep Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.
Notes: Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
Shrug Cast on 153 sts. Work in K1, p1 Rib until piece measures 2 inch (5 cm) from beg. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 42 inch (106-1/2 cm) from beg. Work in K1, p1 Rib until piece measures 44 inch (112 cm) from beg. Bind off.
Finishing Fold piece in half, bringing cast-on edge to bound off edge, to measure 38 x 22 inch (96-1/2 x 56 cm). Place markers on each of the 22 inch (56 cm) sides, 7 inch (18 cm) below fold for armholes. Seam sides from marker down to lower edge. Weave in ends.
