1Use a gauge of 12 sts (4 inch = 10 cm) in pattern to knit a shawl that is about 27 inch (68-1/2 cm) at its widest point x 48 inch (122 cm) long. Remember to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 inch (10 cm) square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if it takes you more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
2Notes: Place markers as instructed on Row 3 to help keep track of your sts. On following rows, slip markers each time you come to them. Shawl begins at center back neck and is shaped by working yarn over (yo) increases on every RS row. A yarn over (yo) creates a new loop on your needle and is worked by wrapping the yarn around your right hand needle. Do not use an existing st to make a yarn over. The finished yarn over will leave an open space (like an eyelet) in your knitting-that is part of this design. 2 sts at the beginning and end of every row are always knit. Shawl sts increase by 4 sts on every RS row, following Row 1. A series of yarn overs and k2togs are worked on Row 9 to create the eyelet pattern. Circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
