Use a gauge of 15 sts (about 4 inch or 10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) to knit a shawl that is 14 inch x 72 inch (35-1/2 cm x 183 cm). Remember to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 inch (10 cm) square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if it takes you more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Stitch Explanation: kfb (knit in front and back) Knit the next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st 1 st increased.
Notes: Shawl is worked in one piece, with shaping on each half. The first half leans diagonally in one direction and the 2nd half leans diagonally in the other direction to create a "V" shape that will lay comfortably on your shoulders. An increase is worked at the beginning and a decrease at the end of every other row in each half of Shawl. The increase and decrease balance each other, so the stitch count remains the same. The Shawl is worked in Garter st (k every row), so is reversible. Slip sts as if to purl.
Shawl First Half Cast on 54 sts. Row 1: Sl 1, kfb, k to last 2 sts, k2tog. Row 2: Sl 1, k to end of row. Rep Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures about 36 inch (91-1/2 cm) along diagonal edge, end with a Row 1. Note: End with a Row 1 means that the last row you work should be a Row 1. Second Half Beginning with Row 1, rep Rows 1 and 2 of first half until second half measures same as first half. Bind off.
Finishing: Weave in ends.
