Project Instructions

  • 1
Use a gauge of 16 sts + 24 rows (about 4 inch or 10 cm) in Textured st to knit a cardigan. Remember to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 inch (10 cm) square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if it takes you more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. Download the full template for the pattern for this project.

Pattern and supplies are written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow a pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning. You will need 7 skeins of Brick (or the color of your choice) to make this Cardigan in sizes XS/S; 10 skeins for sizes M/L; 14 skeins for sizes 1X/2X.

Notes Cardigan is worked in one piece beg at lower edge of back. Sts are cast on for sleeves then piece is divided and the fronts worked separately down to lower edge. A circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

Cardigan Back With larger needle, cast on 73 (97, 113) sts. Row 1 (WS): Purl. Row 2: Knit. Beg with Row 1 of pattern, work in Textured st until piece measures 16 (18, 21) inch (40-1/2 (45-1/2, 53-1/2) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.

Notes End with a WS row means that the last row you work should be a WS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a RS row. Before going on to the next section of the pattern, take a few minutes to look carefully at the WS and RS of your work. As you continue working, you will be changing the st count by increasing sts or decreasing sts. You will continue to work the Textured st, but as the st count changes, Row 1 of the Textured st won't always begin with a knit. By taking the time to study how your work looks on both the WS and RS, it shouldn't be difficult for you to determine which st to begin with. Cast on for Sleeves Next Row (RS): Cast on 48 sts for right sleeve, k to end of row - 121 (145, 161) sts at the end of this row. Next Row: Cast on 48 sts for left sleeve, k1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end of row - 169 (193, 209) sts at the end of this row. Beg with Row 2 of pattern, work in Textured st until piece measures 7 (8, 9) in. (18 (20.5, 23) cm) from cast on sts for sleeves, end with a WS row. Shape Neck Next Row (RS): K70 (80, 86) sts and sl to a st holder for right shoulder, bind off center 29 (33, 37) sts, k to end of row for left shoulder - 70 (80, 86) sts rem on needle for left shoulder. Next Row: Work in Textured st as established across 70 (80, 86) sts for left shoulder. Next Row: Bind off 3 sts, k across - 67 (77, 83) sts rem. Next Row: Work in Textured st as established. Next Row: Bind off 2 sts, k across - 65 (75, 81) sts rem. Left Front Continue in Textured st as established until sleeve measures 16 (18, 20) inch (40-1/2 (45-1/2, 51) cm) from cast on sts for sleeve, end with a RS row. Bind off Left Sleeve Next Row (WS): Bind off 48 sts for left sleeve, continue in Textured st as established - 17 (27, 33) sts at the end of this row. Continue in Textured st until left front measures 16 (18, 21) inch (40-1/2 (45-1/2, 53-1/2) cm) from bound off sts for sleeve, end with a RS row. Purl 1 row. Bind off. Right Front Sl 70 (80, 86) sts for right shoulder from st holder back to larger needle, ready to work a WS row. Rejoin yarn. Next Row (WS): Bind off 3 sts, continue in Textured st as established - 67 (77, 83) sts rem. Next Row: Knit. Next Row: Bind off 2 sts, continue in Textured st as established - 65 (75, 81) sts rem. Continue in Textured st until right sleeve measures same length as left sleeve, end with a WS row. Bind off Right Sleeve Next Row (RS): Bind off 48 sts, k to end of row - 17 (27, 33) sts rem for right front. Continue in Textured st as established until right front measures same length as left front, end with a RS row. Purl 1 row. Bind off.

Finishing Cuffs Note: To pick up sts evenly across an edge, use markers or scrap yarn to divide edge in half, then into quarters. From RS, with smaller needle, pick up and k50 (58, 64) sts evenly spaced across wrist edge of one sleeve. Work in K2, p2 Rib for 6-1/2 inch (16-1/2 cm). Bind off. Rep for other sleeve. Fold Cardigan across shoulder line and sew side and sleeve seams, including cuffs. Collar Note: Right and left halves of collar are worked separately and sewn tog at center of back neck. From RS, with smaller needle, pick up and k134 (150, 174) sts evenly spaced across right front edge, from lower edge up to center of back neck. Work in K2, p2 Rib until collar measures 10 (11, 12) inch (25-1/2 (28, 30-1/2) cm). Bind off. From RS, with smaller needle, pick up and k134 (150, 174) sts evenly spaced across left front edge, from center back neck down to lower edge. Work as for first half of collar. Sew edges of collar tog at center of back neck. Weave in ends.
