Project Instructions

Use a gauge of 14 sts (4 inch) over Traveling Cable pattern to knit a scarf that measures about 19 inch x 55 inch. Be sure to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches to make a 4 inch square, try using a smaller size needle; if it takes you more stitches, try a larger size needle. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere and the chart. Special stitches and abbrevations: 4/3 LC (4 over 3 left cross) = Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k3, then k4 from cable needle. 3/3 LC (3 over 3 left cross) = Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle. 4/3 RC (4 over 3 right cross) = Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back of work, k4, then k3 from cable needle. 3/3 RC (3 over 3 right cross) = Slip 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle. yo (yarn over) = An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows: Bring yarn to front, between the needles. Take yarn to back, over the right needle to make a new st. Notes: Shawl is worked in one piece in a Traveling Cable pattern with ribbing at each end. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Workback and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles. The Traveling Cable pattern can be worked by following the written instructions or by following the chart. When following the chart, read RS rows of chart from right to left and WS rows from left to right. The Traveling Cable pattern works columns of eyelets (made with yarn overs) between the cables. Sts are picked up along both sides of each eyelet column for faux cables. Making the eyelets with yarn overs will increase the st count on that specific row, but the st count will be reduced on the following row by working k2tog's or p2tog's. Faux cables are created by working in St st (k on RS, K on RS) over picked up sts to make St st bands, then wrapping these bands at spaced intervals. The faux cable sections will curl naturally toward the RS.

Lower Ribbing: Row 1 (WS): Working back and forth in rows, as if working on straight needles, p1, *k1, p1; rep from * to end of row. Rows 2-5: K the knit sts and p the purl sts. Note: In the next row you will begin working the Traveling Cable pattern across the row. If desired, place a st marker between each rep of the pattern to help keep your place in the pattern.

Row 8: K1, (p1, k1) twice, yo, p1, k1, *(p14, k1) twice, p1, k1, yo, p1, k1; rep from * once more, p1, k1 - 80 sts. Row 9: (P1, k1) twice, p2tog, k1, p1, *(k14, p1) twice, k1, p2tog, k1, p1; rep from * once more, k1, p1 - 77 sts. Row 10: Rep Row 4. Row 11: (P1, k1) 3 times, p1, *(k14, p1) twice, (k1, p1) twice; rep from * once more, k1, p1. Row 12: Rep Row 4. Rows 13-16: Rep last 2 rows 2 more times. Rows 17-319: Rep Rows 1-16 eighteen more times, for a total of 19 Traveling Cable pattern reps, then rep Rows 1-15 once more.

Top Ribbing: Rep Rows 1-5 of Lower Ribbing. Bind off.

Vertical Faux Cables: Faux Cable Right Half: Pick up and k329 sts on RS of Shawl immediately to the right of the first column of eyelet sts as follows: Pick up and k5 sts evenly spaced across ribbed edge, pick up and k1 st next to eyelet, pick up and k6 sts evenly spaced to next eyelet, *pick up and k1 st next to eyelet, pick up and k8 sts evenly spaced to next eyelet, pick up and k1 st next to eyelet, pick up and k6 sts evenly spaced to next eyelet; rep from * to last eyelet, pick up and k1 st next to last eyelet, pick up and k7 sts evenly spaced to ribbed edge, pick up and k5 sts evenly spaced across ribbed edge - 329 sts. Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 8 rows, working so that RS of St st faces the eyelets. Bind off.
  • 6
Faux Cable Left Half: Make same as right half, picking up sts to the left of the same column of eyelet sts and working so that RS of St st faces the eyelets. Rep right and left faux cable halves along all columns of eyelets.
  • 7
Wrap Faux Cables: The faux cable sections will curl naturally toward the RS (the knit side). Note: Our instructions are for working with a long length of yarn to wrap the faux cables. If you prefer, work with shorter lengths of yarn, knotting each as you finish working with it. Cut a 90 inch length of yarn. Thread length into blunt needle. Beg at one end of Shawl, draw needle from WS to RS through first eyelet. *Wrap yarn around right faux cable, from WS to RS through the right faux cable near the same eyelet, then from RS to WS of Shawl through same eyelet, then from WS to RS up through next eyelet; rep from * to opposite end of Shawl. After last wrap, knot yarn on WS. Rep to wrap the left faux cable, then rep to wrap right and left halves of all faux cables.
