Project Instructions

  • 1
Use a gauge of 10 sts + 14 rows (4 inch) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needles to knit a top that measures in about 32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56) inch in Finished Measurement at Lower Edge and 21 (21-1/2, 22-1/2, 23-1/2, 24-1/2, 25, 25-1/2) inch in Finished Back Length. Be sure to check your gauge. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches to make a 4 inch square, try using a smaller size needle; if it takes you more stitches, try a larger size needle. Pattern and supplies are written for smallest size (XS) with changes for larger sizes (Small, Medium, Large, 1X, 2X, 3X) in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow a pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning. You will need 5 skeins of yarn to make this top in size XS; 6 skeins of yarn to make this top in sizes Small and Medium; 7 skeins to make this top in size Large; 8 skeins to make this top in size 1X; and 9 skeins to make this top in sizes 2X/3X. Download the template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere and the pattern. Stitches Explanation: kfb (knit in front and back) = Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st - 1 st increased. MB (Make Bobble) = (K1, yo, k1, yo) all in next st, turn, p4, turn, k4, pass first, 2nd and 3rd st worked over last st. w&t (wrap and turn) = A technique used to ensure that a small hole doesn't form at the end of a short row. Slip next st as if to purl. Bring yarn between needles to front. Take care not to wrap the yarn over a needle, this would create a new st. Slip same st back to left needle. Turn work and bring yarn between needles to front, in position for next st. This will place a wrap around the st. The next time you knit this st on a RS row, pick up the wrap and knit it tog with the st. Notes: Top is worked in one piece. Lower body is worked from side to side then stitches are picked up to work the upper back and fronts. Short rows are used to shape the lower body. When working short rows, not all sts are worked on every row. Turn when instructed. The wrap and turn technique (w&t) is used when working short rows to prevent holes from forming at the end of short rows.
