Project Instructions

    Use a tension of 25 sts and 26 rows (about 4 inch) with larger needles in Cable Pat to knit this sweater. If the needles listed under supplies do not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required tension. Download template for knitting stitches and abbreviations not explained below and the pattern. The instructions are written for the smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). You will need 6 skeins of Natural Marl to knit this Sweater for sizes XS and S; 7 skeins for sizes M and L. Sizes: Bust measurement: XS 32 inch Small 34 inch Medium 36 inch Large 38 inch Finished bust: XS 33-1/2 inch Small 36 inch Medium 38 inch Large 41 inch Special Stitches: C6B = slip next 3 sts onto a cable needle and leave at back of work. K3, then K3 from cable needle C6F = slip next 3 sts onto a cable needle and leave at front of work. K3, then K3 from cable needle

    Back **With smaller needles cast on 87 (93, 99, 111) sts. 1st row: (RS). K3. *P3. K3. Rep from * to end of row. 2nd row: P3. *K3. P3. Rep from * to end of row. These 2 rows form (K3. P3) ribbing.

    Cont in (K3. P3) ribbing until work from beg measures 2 inch, ending on a 2nd row and inc 17 (19-19-17) sts evenly across last row. 104 (112, 118, 128) sts.

    Change to larger needles and proceed in pat as follows: 1st row: (RS). K4 (3, 1, 1). *C6B. K4. Rep from * to last 10 (9, 7, 7) sts. C6B. K4 (3, 1, 1). Beg with purl row, work 7 rows in stocking st. 9th row: K9 (8, 6, 6). *C6F. K4. Rep from * to last 15 (14-12-12) sts. C6F. K9 (8, 6, 6). Beg with purl row, work 7 rows in stocking st. These 16 rows form Shadow Cable Pat.

Inc 1 st each end of needle on next and every following 8th row twice more. 104 (112, 118, 128) sts. Cont even in pat until work from beg measures 15-1/2 (16, 17, 17) inch, ending with RS facing for next row.

    Shape armholes: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 6 (8, 8, 9) sts beg next 2 rows. 92 (96, 102, 110) sts. Dec 1 st each end of needle on next 3 rows, then every following alt row until there are 76 (76, 80, 84) sts.**

    Sleeves: With smaller needles cast on 45 sts and work 2 inch in (K3. P3) ribbing as given for Back ending on a 2nd row and inc 13 sts evenly across last row. 58 sts.

    Change to larger needles and proceed in pat as follows: 1st row: (RS). K1. *C6B. K4. Rep from * to last 7 sts. C6B. K1. Beg with purl row, work 7 rows in stocking st. 9th row: Inc 1 st in first st. K5. *C6F. K4. Rep from * to last 12 sts. C6F. K4. Inc 1 st in next st. K1. Beg with purl row, work 7 rows in stocking st. These 16 rows form Shadow Cable Pat (with side inc).

Dec 1 st each end of needle on next and following alt rows until there are 54 (54, 50, 50) sts, then on every row until there are 34 (34, 38, 38) sts. Cast off 6 sts beg next 4 rows.     Pin all garment pieces to measurements and cover with a damp cloth, leaving cloth to dry.

    Collar: Sew right shoulder seam. With RS of work facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 20 sts down left front neck edge. K26 from front st holder, dec 5 sts evenly across. Pick up and knit 20 sts up right front neck edge and 3 sts down right back neck edge. K38 from back st holder, dec 6 sts evenly across. Pick up and knit 3 sts up left back neck edge. 99 sts. Beg on a 2nd row, work 3 inch in (K3. P3) ribbing as given for Back, change to larger needles and cont in (K3. P3) ribbing until collar from pick up row measures 7 inch, ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off in ribbing.

    Sew left shoulder and Collar seam, reversing seam for fold to RS. Sew in Sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.
