    Use a gauge of 12-1/2 sts and 16 rows (4 inch) in St st; 6-st cable = 1-3/4 inch wide to knit cardigan that measures approximately 36 (40, 44, 48) inch across the bust. Save time, check your gauge. If the needles listed under supplies do not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required gauge. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere and the pattern. Special abbreviation / Special stitch: mm = millimeter C4B = Sl 2 sts to cable needle and hold to back, k2, k2 from cable needle C4F = Sl 2 sts to cable needle and hold to front, k2, k2 from cable needle C6B = Sl 3 sts to cable needle and hold to back, k3, k3 from cable needle C6F: Sl 3 sts to cable needle and hold to front, k3, k3 from cable needle Cable Stitch: Rows 1 (RS), 7 and 11: Knit. Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl. Rows 3 and 9: On left front and left side of back, work C4B; on right front and right side of back, work C4F. Knit across any 6-st cables on this row, do not cross. Row 5: On left front and left side of back, work C6B; on right front and right side of back, work C6F. Knit across any 4-st cables on this row, do not cross. Rep Rows 1-12 for patt. Next Row (Row 1 of patt—RS): Work 6 (9, 12, 15) sts in garter st; place marker; k4 for 4-st cable; place marker; work 3 sts in garter st; place marker; k6 for 6-st cable; place marker; work 3 sts in garter st; k4 for 4-st cable; place marker; work 4 sts in garter st; place marker; k6 for 6-st cable; place marker; work 4 sts in garter st; place marker; k4 for 4-st cable; place marker; work 3 sts in garter st; place marker; k6 for 6-st cable; place marker; work 3 sts in garter st; place marker; k4 for 4-st cable; place marker; work 6 (9, 12, 15) sts in garter st. Next Row: Knit the garter st sections and purl the cable sections. Continue in pat as set, crossing cables as indicated in cable pat, until piece measures 15 (15-1/2, 16, 16-1/2) inch, ending with a WS row. Next row (Row 1 of patt—RS): Work 6 (9, 12, 15) sts in garter st; place marker; k4 for 4-st cable; place marker; work 3 sts in garter st; place marker; k6 for 6-st cable; place marker; work 3 sts in garter st; k4 for 4-st cable; place marker; work 4 sts in garter st. Finish as for right front, reversing all shaping.

    Sleeve (Make 2): Cast on 30 (34, 38, 40) sts and knit 4 rows. Work in St st, inc 1 st each end of row on next and every 7 (7, 9, 8) rows until there are 50 (54, 56, 60) sts on needle. Work even until piece measures 18 (18, 19, 20) inch, ending with a WS row. Dec 1 st each end of row every other row 7 (8, 9, 10) times – 36 (38, 38, 40) sts.

    Finishing: Damp block pieces if desired. Sew shoulder seams. Set in sleeves, sew side and sleeve seams. Button Band: On left front, RS facing, pick up and knit 52 (54, 56, 58) sts. Knit 3 rows. Bind off. Mark location of buttonholes on right front. Buttonhole Band: On right front, RS facing, pick up and knit 52 (54, 56, 58) sts. Knit 1 row. Knit next row, working (yo, k2tog) at each buttonhole marker. Knit next row. Bind off. Neck Trim: With RS facing, pick up and knit 60 (62, 70, 72) sts evenly around neckline. Knit 1 row. Bind off. Weave in ends. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
